Perhaps they mean to quarantine the cat and check for signs of rabies?

Agreed, that's pretty dumb to turn him over for euthanasia after treatment like that.  I'd be pretty pissed if a vet charged me for treating an animal that they just turn over for euthanasia.

God I hope that's what they meant, and it was just a misunderstanding.

I can notify DCAS to put a hold on this cat, but the only place I have willing to take cats right now is my friend's barn.

I left a message with the director asking them to put a hold on the cat and to please not euthanize him for a rabies test, but to quarantine him instead. I'm assuming they are concerned about rabies because he was bit by another animal?

Is anyone interested in fostering or adopting him? Otherwise, he will be going to live on my friend's farm. FYI, DCAS no longer takes in stray cats, they are fixed at Lifeline and then released back to where they were found. I figure my friend's farm is safer than where he got attacked and he will be well taken care of by an animal lover.

someone on my FB friend's page mentioned fostering, but I believe that was only until a permanent home could be found. If the farm could be a permanent home, that sounds like the best option.

The director just called me back and didn't know about the cat. I emailed the photos to her and she is going to try and figure out which cat it is so she can put a hold on him. In the first post it says male cat and then the update it says female, is the cat male or female? Can someone PM me the name of the person that dropped the cat off at Village Vets? The more info I have, the better chance we have at making sure this kitty is safe.

So no one has a description of the 2 dogs that attacked the cat?  Hope it wasn't a beagle and a dalmation.....

Whitnerd, I'm PMing you right now. As for everything else, here is what I definitively know:
-neighbor knocked on my door at 8:45 AM Sunday to tell me a cat had been mauled by two dogs with collars. couldn't provide a description.
-we got the cat in a crate, neighbor took IT to VV immediately. She called ahead of time to confirm that they would take in a stray and operate on a charity-case basis.
-I called VV Monday AM to get an update, receptionist knew nothing, took info, didn't return call.
-I called again Tuesday afternoon, receptionist knew nothing again, put me on hold for a long time, came back and said she didn't know much but she asked a technician who said the cat was stable and that Animal Services was scheduled to pick HIM up that afternoon for rabies testing. Perhaps she meant something else, but that's what she said.
Cat is male, according to VV. Calling it a she was just an initial guess on my part, so all gender related concerns should be alleviated.

On a side note, I have a suspicion that the 2 dogs are 2 blue pits that I believe (but am not 100% certain) live on Josephine Ave, because I saw them running away from the same neighbors yard late last night.

Spoke to VV again this afternoon, and Susan at the front desk was very apologetic that she had been misinformed. The cat did not make it and was put down due to the extent of his injuries. Animal Services was scheduled to pick him up to "continue the rabies testing". I don't know if that's because he bit my neighbor when we were trying to crate him or if that's normal.
So that's the update. Poor guy didn't make it and spent the last few hours of his life terrified and in pain.

But the important thing is that people tried to make the kitty make it.  Poor baby.  Thank you for helping.
Yes, I agree, with that I knew someone close that smoked and went to chewing tobacca. Used a spit can which was yuck, and then the door of his car.~Denise

I am sure that VV did everything they could ease his suffering. They took in a kitty I brought in a couple years ago that had been hit by a car. The spine was broken and their was no chance. They told me that they would comfort the kitty and had already eased her pain so they could examine her. She was however, also put down to extent of injuries a bit later that night. So you did the right thing, instead of her suffering and dying cold, alone, and terrified, she was in the care of people who were willing to do what they could, she was probably comfortable, warm, and died humanely, instead of horrible suffering. Good work people, good work.

I know most of the people who work there and I'm sure they provided as much comfort at the end as possible, as did you and your neighbor.  Thanks to both of you for helping this kitty out!

Oh, and yes, if an unknown animal (ie there are no vaccination records/history/stray/not up to date/etc.) bites anyone that is standard protocol to either test it (postmortem if it didn't survive, had to be euthanized, etc.) or quarantine it for a specific period (usually at the monetary expense of a private individual).  Please let your neighbor know-if they don't already-that they need to check in with animal control to make sure they don't need to get the post exposure rabies vaccination series.

I will, thank you for the information. She asked when she dropped the cat off but was told that cats are usually not carriers of rabies; as long as they're doing the testing, though, I'm sure she'll want to keep up with that. Good info to know!!
