Undesired housemates - Pest Control Recommendations
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:06 am »
Last night, we found we have some variety of animal living in our attic/walls.  I'm amazed at its boldness considering the number of animals in our house.  Can anyone recommend someone who takes care of this sort of thing, and can anyone let me know what kind of pricetag to expect?  For what it's worth, I don't think it's a squirrel since it seems more active at night, but who knows...

If you have an older house it's almost a given there will be intruders at some point since the older homes tend to be a bit more...porous...

Does 60's qualify as older?

I'm not surprised our house is a bit porous - the master bedroom is a converted car-port, and there are a couple things that make me question the construction.

That said, the past two winters have been a lot harsher than this one (hell, there was probably an autumn in there that was harsher than this winter), so I'm a bit surprised that we're getting a visitor now.

I just want him/her to leave.

We had this issue several years ago when we lived in Kirkwood. They ended up being flying squirrels. Which I didnt even know we had in Atlanta. The reason they were only active at night and I had no idea they lived around here is because the are nocturnal. Could be what you got.

Yeah...I read that flying squirrels were the only nocturnal ones.  I dismissed them since I hadn't seen any around, but if they're nocturnal...

Mind if I ask how much it cost you to take care of, and who you used?

Anyone got a moose I can borrow?

I have rodent traps. If you need them. Same as cat traps just smaller. I caught a rat in my attic with one
I don't have kids.  I've never figured out what they're for.

well on several occasions they got into our house and our dog cornered them and we caught we snatched them up with a pair of gloves and relocated them.  We thought we relocated them far enough away but they always came back. So we never officially took care of them and we ended up moving. Did not move because of them we ended up moving because our land lord was a jerk and among other things would not take care of the issue, Sorry I'm no help.

Sorry to sound "inhumane"...but you're not actually relocating rats, are you?

I had squirrels  and tried to take care of the problem myself.  Over time, it seemed my solutions would end up being foiled by the very persistent buggers.  So, I decided to get the professionals involved and I used Stinger Pest Solutions.  They did a variety of things to keep them from coming in and it ran around $500 if I'm not mistaken.  I haven't had a problem since which has been almost 3 years.

We have said critters in our attic/walls. I haven't heard them in a while so I'm hopeful all the ruckus at my house and the cat scared them off. That said, we called On Target Pest Control (love Vinnie) and got an estimate of $1500 which included trapping and relocating. I mentioned trapping and poisoning so the litte feckers never come back but apparently that's not humane.  :(~

Strobe lights work wonders, there's a thread somewhere on here about it.

My parents had the same issue actually and they plugged one of those high frequency pest deterrers in the attic and it seemed to works.
