In researching "home remedies," I've seen mixed results with the high-frequency solutions.  On top of that, I'm not sure our menagerie of animals which we actually want to be in the house would be too happy with that.

I'm considering the strobe light (if I can find one).  Anyone know where to buy a strobe light when it's not Halloween (or have one I could borrow?)

Get Arrow Exterminator over to take a look. We use them for our mosquito spraying and they came and looked at our mysterious occasional critter in the wall problem. Their solution is to close up the gap we have between the roof edge and the floor of the attic (6" gap in some places!) with a metal panel (not wood), set traps, and monitor. We were having some other stuff done in the house that took priority, but we've got it on our "to do" for about $1200 (our house is on the larger side of ranch). If the critters come back, Arrow covers any damage done. For life.

I was wondering about what they charged, but they have to come out to assess first, which has proven difficult to set up because of our schedules.

Every winter for about 3 years I had squirrels in the attic and in the walls and mice everywhere.  I could set a mouse trap every 3 minutes and empty it over and over for hours.  They were literally clawing through the walls and ceiling.  It drove me insane for a while.

I tried everything, patching up holes, steel wool in holes, moth balls, high frequency rodent machines, traps, etc. etc. and the only thing that has worked is 'Rodent Strobe'.  The day I put it in the attic and two in the crawl space, the clawing and scratching and running around stopped immediately and has never returned.  Google 'rodent strobe'.

When I first moved in to my house in '02, I was unpacking boxes in my garage when a rat scrambled out. I was really freaked out and went to Home Depot and bought a high frequency thingy. I put in in my laundry room. I have never unplugged it and I have never seen another rodent since.

I'm interested in this method, but my biggest concern is if I drive any rodents out of the crawlspace, they'll just take up residence in another portion of the house (in walls, behind cabinets, etc.).  Would you use the strobe in conjunction with some trapping/killing method?

Happy to report that the strobe seems to be working...

We just got the cheapo Party City one for $19.99 to see if it would even work before we invested in the uber one. Well, not a peep from the walls or attic since it went in and we've had some awfully cold nights that I have to think would make our attic pretty appealing.

So, we think it's a success!

I had them in my walls, they came into the kitchen, had one crawling up the curtains in my bedroom that fell down on me when I woke up, had them literally coming through the ceiling in my back bedroom, they had chewed holes in the wood floor and were coming into the back bedroom.  I say 'they' because I wasn't ever sure exactly what they always were.  I know that I had mice and squirrels, and I suspect possums, not sure about rats though.

I put one 'rodent strobe' up in the attic because it's a wide open space.  The noises stopped up there immediately but I continued to hear noises in the crawl space and walls.  I bought two for the crawl space.  The day that I put it in the crawl space, I was sitting at my desk in a room next to the kitchen and I saw a mouse run from under the stove, stop dead in it's tracks and looked over at me for about 5 seconds, frozen, it seemed confused.  It ran back under the stove and disappeared.  It was kind of surreal.  I haven't really heard any sounds since except on a rare occasion I'll hear something scramble around then disappear.  I suspect that it's something that gets into the crawlspace and freaks out when it encounters the strobe.

It's not like a party strobe light.  It sends out a single strobe about every other second.  I believe I paid around $120 for the single one.  It's well made and has a very long cord on it.  Supposedly the bulb lasts continuously for up to 8 years.  I've had mine about 3 years and it's still going strong.  It was money well spent.  I was so impressed with it that I wrote a testimonial on the website.

So to answer your question, if you put one in your attic and crawlspace, any rodents it drives into the house, will be temporary.  In my case it seemed to drive them away.  If they get in the walls, they have to come out at some point for food and water.  I think they leave and don't come back.  I can't imagine a worst case scenario than what was going on at my house.  It was really bad.

Thanks for the info.
Couple things...

My attic space is sort of an L shape...or maybe a T with one side of the cross bar being much shorter.  The chimney is in the center of the space and we have a fair amount of boxes stored up there.  If I put one up there where I'm most confident that they are, do you think it would drive them out completely or just to a part of the attic that blocks out the strobe?

we have the same problem in our crawl space.  it is very short where the furnace is, which is also in the middle of the crawl space.  we'd have to put one on either side to be fully effective.  i think you'd need to have one in each leg of the "L" for total coverage.  then again, if you're sure only one side of it has any holes, you could try just putting it on that side and see if it works.

My crawlspace has a ton of boxes and other shit plus my furnace and all the ducts coming off of it.  I did buy two for down there but it still left the potential for spaces not covered by the strobe.  The strobe tends to fill up spaces, even the areas that you think it wouldn't (if that makes sense).  If you positioned the strobe more towards the t part in your attic, it should reach into those areas but I can't say that for certain because I don't know how big the space is.

Have you been to the website?  There's a ton of information on there.  The man who owns the company is very helpful.  He called me two times over the few months after I purchased it to follow up and make sure everything was good.  He's pretty accessible by phone.  I'd talk to him about it.  Link below.

Either way, if you have to get two, it's a lot cheaper than the 2,000 I originally spent to seal things up prior to buying the strobe.  My house is 100 years old and they always seem to find their way back in.  They were burrowing holes underground to get in the crawlspace so there was no way to seal that up.

http://www.rodentstrobe.com/  There's a great video on the home page of a squirrel discovering the strobe at a hole in the roof.

Also, I have a lot of tiny spaces and gaps in my crawlspace and attic and at night it looks like some type of hi tech alarm system.  I've been asked about it by a few people on the street and I tell them that's what it is.  :police:

Yeah, I saw that site.  What the F is up with that 50 point font?  Dude needs a serious website overhaul.

I've also seen the Evictor...and I'm sure they're probably essentially identical.

Does your house look like it's flashing? Our house is also 100+ years old and we have something living in the floor between upstairs and downstairs. I'd rather put a strobe light in but then wonder how it would look at night since there are plenty of holes (hence the critters) around the attic/walls.

No kidding on the senior citizen friendly font!

I checked out the other site and am amazed at the price difference $138 for 400k from rodent strobe and $339 for 100k from the evictor.
