EA Farmers Market needs some help.
« on: March 31, 2011, 08:33 pm »
If you are free on Saturday April 9th, the EA Farmers market needs some help cleaning up the new site and making it a beautiful home for their neighborhood market.   As part of the Beautification clean-up this past weekend that area has already had at least the trash picked up, but many more things are needing to be done to get it ready to go.  Please see attached flier - and pass along to anyone that might be interested.

Clue, is this the lot between Icehouse and the salon or between the salon and (I think) a small building that usually has graffiti on it?

On my calendar, same day as the Menonite church Spring Fling.  I'll probably go on the tour of the church's gardens first and then come over.

Also the same day as a volunteer day at BPA for a book event sponsored by Target.  Maybe Clue and I can work out some kind of divide and conquer strategy.  I'll send the 4 year old to build the picnic tables.

Menonite church Spring Fling is on the 16th!
However this is the same day as the Holy Comforter plant sale and an Eagle Scout project date I'm involved with, so I'm all booked up!
I'm a little miffed why this wasn't mentioned sooner.

Lot between red Salon (old Kingfischer and "bakery") so I think you second choice sounds right.

Also the same day as the LSU Spring football game.

So, talk of the work on their new space has me excited / thinking. Does anybody know what the overall site plan looks like? I know that salon uses a lot of the gravel portion for parking now (they must have a dozen cars there every day) - does that part stay as parking space and remain available for general parking? It also gets a fair amount of use at night from Midway, etc. But reducing parking in favor of more space for vendors, tables, etc. is pretty appealing as well.

And with a nice, dedicated space, are there plans to grow the market? Something like a once-monthly weekend market would be awesome and take a lot of pressure off the "hurry up on Thursdays after work" situation that some people find themselves in now.

I was wondering the same thing.

There are no plans for a weekend market here at this time. Grant Park market will be opening Sunday AM's. There is the Edgewood, Peachtree Road, Decatur and Virginia Highlands weekend markets for you to enjoy on the weekends at this time. With that many markets, there are simply not enough vendors to hold another weekend market in the city at this time (on our scale). No mention of this has been made in the future, but nothing is ever out of the realm of possibility.
The Farmers Market property will be open at all times. The only time it will not be available for alternate uses is during market hours. Eventually there will be (in the grass area) a garden and seating areas and all will be welcome to enjoy during on and off marketing hours. The goal is to have a functional community space to meet the needs of the community. That includes parking!!

So the setup will remain as is? Would be nice to push the parking in a little and have more grass, less gravel. But this will be a very nice upgrade for the lot regardless. And for the Farmer's Market.

Sorry, I think technically you are right, it's Kirkwood.

The gravel area will either not change or may get a bit larger, it depends on what is allowed. The market is ready to expand and add more vendors. The grassy area will become useful space for everyone! It should be quite nice, I hope!!
