Favorite food products
« on: July 27, 2011, 12:11 pm »
I think we may have touched on this in the past, but the talk of coffee in another thread got me thinking about food products I have found, love and can't live without. And as such things are not typically pushed by the American Marketing Machine, learning about others from like-minded appreciators of things that are the opposite of suck seems like a good time.

I'll start.

Steen's 100% Pure Cane Syrup

A bit of Steen's can be dropped pretty much anyplace "sweet" is called for. Our own enduser has perfected the Steen's Pecan Pie to a level never thought possible by a Yankee.

Pride of Szeged sweet paprika. It's just about the best paprika you can find here (and they carry it at Publix.) Paprika is my favorite spice so I really depend on this one.

Another thing I go to great lengths to obtain is my beloved Wicked Good Charcoal. Matter of fact, I'm close to needing to order some more.
Next time you drink a homebrew, thank Jimmy Carter, who on October 14, 1978 signed H.R.1337 legalizing homebrewing in the United States.

Love the thread. Being from Alabama, I have to go with Conecuh smoked sausage from Evergreen. All of it is great, but my favorite is the spicy version:

It's available in groceries around here (Glenwood Publix, at least). Outstanding all purpose sausage- toss it in your next low country boil- but the traditional method is to grill it and serve it on white bread with yellow mustard. Off the grill, the casing has a nice pop to it that few sausages can match.

Yeah, I need to start stocking that stuff at home. Going on the grocery list now.

We could probably do a separate thread just on sauces. Regular Tabasco, chipotle Tabasco (don't hate), Pickapeppa and this Calypso sauce stuff are staples around here.

OK, I'll play

horseraddish mayo or reg mayo mixed with sriracha, seasoned rice vinegar (roasted garlic is a staple for salads and pickling)

I got a can of La Chinata Smoked Paprika that is pretty awesome.
http://lachinata.com/en/index.htm

I'm also very fond of the dried mango slices with hot chile powder.  You can get it at TJoes or any good ethnic market for cheaper.

And finally fermented mustard greens.  Mix them up in any stir fry and you've got something exotic and special.

As for sauces:
Matouks Hot Pepper Salsa Picante.
El Yucateco Green sauce as seen at Holy Taco
And get yourself a jar of this chili garlic sauce, dump out a little to make some space and them add two good handfuls of chopped basil.  Let it sit for a week in the fridge and then enjoy on everything.

In Costa Rica, there's a bottle of Costa Rican salsa on every table. It's a cousin to worchestershire, but it's tangier and spicier, and has a lot of vegetables blended into it. Amazing all-purpose sauce. Lizano is the most popular brand.

Discovered while my brother is doing his residency in Birmingham, I have fallen in love with Diet Grapico. It tastes like a full on sugared drink but it has none...can't get it here so I always beg my bro to bring me what he can when he visits...so yummy!  ;D

My favorite Korean packaged ramen.  Contains no MSG and not fried.  I make special trips to Super H Mart for this stuff:

The best ever packaged ramen.  Manufactured by the same company but cooked up by satan.  Fried, packed with MSG and oh so spicy and delicious.  Shin Ramyun is available a lot more places.

Course you can add meats, eggs, veggies, whatever but I'm lazy and stick to what's in the package.

I buy EvilGit's paprika regularly, but BBQ Steve, I need to try the one you recommended (and send some to my BIL, he's a paprika addict too).
I like this no-name curry powder I get at a dollar store in Toronto. It's an East Indian blend, and the most common "non-ethnic" curry you can find there. I make a curried stew with it, so good!
Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar is one of my #1 fave products. A touch in baking makes everything so tender, and if you are a crock pot user, a teaspoon to a tablespoon early on in the process of cooking almost anything in it (OK, not say, rice pudding) makes stuff taste mysteriously delicious!
