FYI from AJC:

Quote
Community garden to hold mushroom class

Decatur High's Community Garden will sponsor a demonstration on growing shitake mushrooms, in conjunction with the garden's workday Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. Master Gardener Riduan Joesoef will teach how to inoculate logs to growing shitake mushrooms. Afterward garden members will set up a community muchroom garden. The demonstration is free in exchange for working in the garden. Information: Diane Loupe at dloupe@mindspring.com or 404-374-3990

I did a stack of mushroom logs after the tornadoes.  I didn't maintain them well but we did have mushrooms for about 3 years!  Basically you drill holes in your log and then hammer in a wood spore peg and then cover with beeswax.
Yes, I agree, with that I knew someone close that smoked and went to chewing tobacca. Used a spit can which was yuck, and then the door of his car.~Denise

Urban Cannibals has a very cool mushroom growing kit for I think $19. They have one on display and there were lots of mushrooms. It's a box that you just peel off the side and add water.

I've been growing one of those boxes for months, Cal liked the picture of mine I posted on FB and I think that may be where she got the idea to sell them.  The guy I bought mine from was pitching them there one day too.  It grows oyster mushrooms in a block of used coffee grounds.  Mine has bloomed 6 times since I started it.

You can post a picture of your box on the manufacturers fb page and they will donate one to a school.

Growing mushrooms is super easy! Lots of fun. Getting the materials is not so easy for shitake (the logs can be hard to find, it's the demand). Unless, say you have a giant tree trunk in your yard that could be put to good use.

My mushroom kit is not growing well. Where are you keeping yours, Insan0? Mine has yet to do anything but keep drying out. I spray and spray it, soak it...nothing and drying out. I can see the white spore has killed off on the open side quite a bit too.

Kitchen window.  It's bloomed 3 times from 1 soaking, even blooming again without spraying it.  I need to soak it again now and see if It'll bloom a 7th time.

My kitchen is neither warm, nor humid. Actually we've been trying to dry out after these rains and a flooded basement, so I suspect I've got to soak it awhile to hydrate the poor spores.

Back to the Roots is actually in the store today (Saturday) from 12pm-3pm or so for a Local Foods Day event if you want to come in and ask him what's up. So, bring it in and maybe he can help you with it  :)

Ohh, thanks guys! I totally missed this, I was out and about all day today!! I'm gonna do a soaking again this evening and see if we can get it going. I'm pretty sure it was the two dry days that made my poor mushrooms unhappy...
