Stump removal
« on: April 06, 2011, 11:45 am »
So a couple years ago the City Parks Dept. removed a dying tree from our curb (at our request).  However, they never removed the stump.  My wife and I would check in with the department intermittently and would get the response that the folks who do the tree stuff only schedule on a day-to-day basis so they couldn't tell us when they'd be out, but that we were still on the list and they'd come for the thing sooner or later.  Fast forward to yesterday when they informed me that they had no budget for stump removal and wouldn't know if they were going to until June (I'm not optimistic).

So how much could I expect to pay if I did this myself and does anybody think that we could get a group rate on stump grinding if a few of us teamed up (I know of several stumps within half a block of my house alone)?

We just went through this exact thing down Patterson from you.  The Parks Dept. are never going to grind it.  They flat told me so.  I got several quotes, and mine was about the same size as yours.  I ended up going with someone Kevy Duty had gotten a quote from and forgot their name, but they were by far the cheapest at $175 for mine and $175 for my neighbor's.  Everyone else wanted around $300 because of the proximity to the road.  I have never run a stump grinder, but I think that being that close to the sidewalk and road make's it tough for someone that does not know what they are doing.

Can you just set it on fire?
Yes, I agree, with that I knew someone close that smoked and went to chewing tobacca. Used a spit can which was yuck, and then the door of his car.~Denise

1. Drill holes in it (largest bit you have).
2. Pour brush killer in the holes (be careful not to spill too much on the surrounding grass/shrubbery/etc., unless you want it and everything near it to die).
3. Let sit for a week.
4. Whack at it with an axe or maul to remove the rotted wood.
5. Repeat until gone.

Did this with a stump in our front yard.  Down to almost nothing after 2 go-rounds.

One way to find out....

I wondered about that stump rot stuff...  Since the stump is right on the road would I need to worry about kids/pets getting into it?

Call 811 before you (or your stump-grinder) go to digging!!!

Or else ....

Pets, no.  Kids.....well, if they're dumb enough to go picking around a rotting stump.... :(~

I wanted to say that but I was afraid.  Thank you for voicing my opinion.

Just used this guy back in December for a big oak stump.  Highly recommend

Give Steve's Tree Service, Inc. a call @ 770-474-5565 a call. They did a damn good job for our neighbor on a tree job and they are fully insured.

Thanks for the recommendation.  Ellis and his son came out yesterday and did a great job and at a fraction of the cost that I'd be previously quoted!
