Urban Cannibals
« on: Dec 08, '09, 03:09 pm »
Ok, so I read here on the Buzz great things about Urban Cannibals....so I made my way over there today for a take-out lunch.  Mind you that I consider myself an epicurean when it comes to great cuisine that exhibits unique flavor and spice combinations....even comfort food.

Well, OMG what a GREAT addition to EAV!!!!!  I had their chicken salad (on a bed of mixed greens)....just a perfect combination of ingredients and flavor. Such rich flavors. I also decided to add my own "side" and got a container of their kale simmered in homemade chicken stock......best and most flavorful, yet simple, greens I've ever had.

The women who run the place were very nice...and its just a great atmosphere in there. The are careful not to prepare such large amounts of items so they sit on the shelves or in the cooler for day....they want their in-store made products to be really fresh.  Reminds me of the corner store in the neighborhood I grew up in the late '50's and early '60's

UC is long overdue for East Atlanta.    Go by and give them a try. *:)* :)% |:)| <:)~

I second this - I stopped in for a sandwich today and asked about the turkey rueben Cal used to have at Calavino's - it wasn't on the menu but she went out of her way to make it for me anyway & it was delicious.  It was quick too - I was in a hurry and managed to get back to court in time.   |:)|   I will so be going back!

Cal and Doria are the most accommodating and caring people! They realize that their success depends on your happiness and satisfaction with their ability to serve you, and their community.

Why yes, yes they do! Picked up some soup and kale for lunch tomorrow. The kale may not make it through the night it's calling me from the fridge....

Thanks for starting the thread, Smartin. Calavino and Doria are like family in the Village (because they are freaking awesome people), so the traditional review/discussion thread for new restaurants (hopefully the city won't come calling if we call it that) sort of got overlooked.

My tip - grab some of her gouda/applewood bacon queso from the cooler and a bag of blue corn chips. Amazing stuff - and excellent find on these chips. And they sell sweet, sugared Mexican Coke!

And another tip - if you start chatting with Calavino about dinner possibilities and she offers to roast you up a chicken, clear it with Doria first. I almost got Calavino in trouble on Saturday.

Got this exact thing shortly after going to EAV Santa. Sent Mr. Mellamur and the kids home while I ran an errand. I was gone for maybe an hour. When I got home there was nothing but crumbs.  :'(  Must stop in and get more so I can try it.

Yea, I'm quick to say,  "sure, I can do that" then I am reminded of the million other things I actually have to do. :(~   As far as the city goes, you can call it what you want as long as we don't go filling the place up with tables we are a grocery/deli.

We are as happy to be here as you are to have us :)% thanks for the support.

Thank you, Ladies, for the fabulous melty brie sandwich this morning!  It was deeeeeelicious!!   :)%

Oh, and as I mentioned to Cal, the other night my hubby and I were making venison stew and realized we had no canned tomatoes (we ended up having tons of fresh ones that we didn't realize so we made the stew base with them), BUT we ended up saying "OOH!  I'll bet Urban Cannibals has them!"  We were all happy.  We said the same thing this morning about firewood.  It's like a magical little place that sells all the crap I use!!

Yay!
