COA Water and Sewer Line Warranty Program
« on: October 26, 2011, 03:55 pm »
I've received a couple of solicitations in the mail for this. Looks like it's available in installments or as a $46 annual fee. Anyone know anything about it and/or have a recommendation pro or con?

I just read an article on the 15 Insurance Policies You Don't Need', this was on the list.  Here's what they said:

7. Water Line Coverage
Water companies have made an aggressive push to sell policies that cover the repair of the water line that runs from the street to your house. The odds are in your favor that you will never use this coverage, particularly if you live in a newer home. If you live an average suburban neighborhood and you do need to repair the water line, the distance to the street is short, the likelihood of a problem is low and repair costs are a few thousand dollars or less. The same goes for policies offered by other utility companies.

Thanks, that thread totally passed me by! At least it turns out there are some new opinions coming out on this one.

You don't get to choose the contractor...the insurance company does. Keep that in mind, as you haven't any say in who is showing up at your home.

I agree with this in theory.  But I know for a fact that it's just a matter of (not much) time before I will have to replace at least the sewer line from my house to the street, and probably both.  I'm all over this!

Plus, speaking personally, I don't "live in a newer home" or "in an average suburban neighborhood." We live with probably one of the poorest-maintained sewers you can find, so it's making me say hmm.

I've been eying that spigot sticking out of the middle of my front yard since we moved in, wondering when the galvanized piping would fail.  Every time I accidentally bump it with the lawnmower, I think to myself...d'oh!  this is it!

I still don't want to pay for this 'insurance' though.  I'd rather keep the money in an interest-accruing savings account.  :(~

yeah, me too. I had a pipe break in the ice storm last year, and imagine more will break next time. $92/year is nothing compared to the "few thousand dollars" cited above.

I think it's only $46/year.

I'm on the fence with this. It's almost like the city is selling us insurance for stuff they should have taken care of all along (tell me CoA isn't getting a cut off of this -- the solicitation came on their letterhead). We replaced the line to the street about 10 years ago, so I'm thinking we're good, but who the hell knows what mayhem exists below the surface. Sewer system is in shambles.

It's $46 for the water line and $46 for the sewer line.

If the line(s) were replaced anytime within the past decade, I certainly wouldn't get this insurance.  But we have a tree growing roots through our sewer line to the street, and it's only a matter of time before the line is damaged beyond use.

That was my first thought too: revenue program for the COA. Particularly because the letter referenced the leadership of Councilmembers Moore and Sheperd, and I am well-familiar with both of them and their brand of 'leadership.' Those two members and/or COA are getting a kickback on this. I'll eat the $1200 on principle rather than contribute to this program.

Gotta hand it to them, they're making money off of their own negligence. Lemons/Lemonade.
