is there an easy way to tell what type of lines you have?

You might be able to see the waterline in the meter box or where it enters the house.

Look under the house too.  The poly is usually blue or brown plastic.

Typical water line replacement should run $800-1,200, sewer can easily be $2,000+.  Sewer line is usually more expensive since the elevation, fall in the line, and under house excavation have to be taken into account, it really depends on your yard.

For the DIY crowd, make sure you contact GA811 (call before you dig) as cost can quickly get out of hand if you hit a utility line...

I doubt I'll be buying the insurance, but if you have a house with 20 year old polybutelene, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea as that is about the life span.  Houses with copper main lines can last 40 years or more.  If you have a galvanized main line, it is likely at the end of it's lifespan...

Yeah, let me be clear: I'm not saying the insurance is a bad idea per se, but I bet there are companies out there you could buy it from who are *not* in bed with COA who might do a better job as stewards of our money. Because you know that the company that got this lucrative gig was the company that was the best-run, most financially-sound, and had the best service.
If he gets an MLB contract, all is forgiven.

Now, this COA group are not the same cronies that did such an "EXCELLENT" job on the new water meter contract, are they?

Be sure you read the fine print.  Poly lines are not covered when I looked into the terms on their website.

I received an offer from American Water Resources.  It addresses me as a CoA water customer, which I am not.  Do you think they'd still "insure" my water line?  I'm much prefer sewer line insurance.
Or maybe they're happy and content, living their little donut lives until the monstrous humans come along to rip their doughy flesh open with their teeth, sucking up their jelly innards.
