Rug / Carpet disposal?
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:27 pm »
Assuming one doesn't want to just dump an old 8 x 10 area rug on the curb in the hopes that someone will take it away, is there a place to take it to dispose of it?  I happen to have one in the trunk of my car that is really kinda beyond hope and is too expensive to have cleaned (I'm getting quotes north of $200, which is more than we spent on the rug in the first place!).  Rather than sneaking it into a dumpster in the dark of night, is there a convenient place that accepts this sort of trash?

Any curbside in UniD.

I briefly toyed with the idea of just laying it out in the middle of Glenwood out by the golf course since it seems like there is always a ton of trash in the road in that area...but I couldn't find a convenient place to pull over and drop it.

We tore up the carpeting from our attic and called for bulk pickup, which they did the next week on our regular trash day.
Or you could chop it up and put it in your regular herbie curbie, which I also did with some pieces I wanted gone before we pulled out the bulk of it. (And by we, I mean Mr Mrice.)

Tomorrow is trash day.  You can leave it on my curb.  Chances are someone will take it.  I pulled out nasty dark green dog pee soaked carpeting and someone actually took some pieces AND the padding.  I hope they wanted it for an outdoor space.

Yeah...thought of that.  Just a major PITA to cut it up and thought there might be a place nearby to drop it.
Guess I'll have to go find the carpet knife...

I found it very therapeutic.

It would make good garden mulch.  Just punch holes in it where you put the tomatoes in.  Just dare the chickweed to grow through it!

I might do an Internet search to investigate what nasty chemicals might have been used in making it, though. The carpet industry isn't known for being organic.

City of Atlanta considered old carpeting a toxic hazard when our neighbors found it buried in their yard. I think Mohawk now makes "greener" carpets if you choose to use them.
