vampire flicks
« on: September 07, 2008, 01:38 am »
seeing as we have a zombie flicks thread, we certainly cant discriminate against the vamps too.  any good vampire flick recommendations out there?

a few of my favs:
Lost Boys - this is an 80s film everyone needs to see at least once
Interview with Vampire - yea its got tom cruise...but that doesnt stop the awesomeness
Bram Stokers Dracula - decent adaptation.  oldman is terrific.  bonus: a pre-matrix monica bellucci
Fright Night - classic vamp film from the 80s
From Dusk til Dawn - this film is a riot. cool gore, smoking selma, funny dialogue
Underworld - interesting take on vamp/werewolf history. some love it some dont. sequel was a little bit of a letdown.
Nightwatch - cool russian film.  new concepts not used before in vamp films like the gloom.  sequel was ok, original thought was better.  cant wait for the conclusion film ini 09.
30 Days of Night - vamps in this one are really cool.  fantastic movie.  wasnt excited about the ending, but the overall film was good and interesting concept with the constant night thing.
Vampires - yea you get the shitty baldwin....but james woods kickin vampire ass is a must see.

Fright Night! Loved that movie when I was younger. Evil Ed.
Another 80's one that cracked me up (as a kid) was "Love at First Bite", with George Hamilton.

"Vampire's Kiss" ?  (Nic Cage eats a cockroach?)

"Shadow of the Vampire" - great twist on Murnau's "Nosferatu"

"Blade" and "Blade 2", but not "Blade 3"....if only for Kris Kristofferson's dialogue.

"Salem's Lot" - too bad it wasn't a theatrical release, but still....that kid at the window made me lose some sleep.

"Near Dark"....Paxton Vampire!
"everything is coconut these days." in related news, she went birding in Sri Lanka and had some great coconut water there.

Awesome, Toddler!   That kid had me sleeping with one eye open for about a month!!

near dark is a good cult one from the 80s.  its pretty bad overall but worth the watch alone for the bar scene.
i really liked shadow of the vampire as well.  it was a very interesting twist on the nosferatu movie and dafoe was awesome in it.
i totally forgot about love at first bite.  too funny.  havent seen it since i was a kid.  now that i think abou it hamilton...as very very tan vampire could be worth a queue entry and rewatch.
i actually liked the blade movies, especially the first one.  i did watch Blade House of Chton the other night....dont waste your time with that one.

NEAR DARK. Put the lost boys in their sorry ass, wimpy, fashion victim place.
Frank Langella's Dracula from 1979
Francis Ford Copella's Bram Stokers Dracula.  "I have crossed oceans of time to find you..."
Fright Night.

Honorable mention:

All the ones already mentioned, but most especially:

Shadow of the Vampire.
The Blade movies are fun
I really like Interview, wish they'd done The Vampire Lestat with Cruise. I thought he was pretty good.
haven't seen Nightwatch yet...
I did like John Carpenters "Vampires" with Sheryl Lee as a little vamp cutie pie and James Woods was great.
And Underworld I and II... only because of Kate Beckinsales ass in leather. That is all.

A little oldtimey B&W vamp arty goodness with the Nosferatu (the silent original) and Les Vampires (french serial). The 70s remake of Nosferatu is also very good.

Andy Warhol's Dracula -- Udo Keir, unintentionally hilarious.
The Addiction -- Heroin as vampires, excellent but arty fer sure.

The Nightwatch series is from a set of books if you are so inclined to go to the source(s).

Don't forget the upcoming Twilight (squeal!)

I don't know if many of you remember a series they did back in the mid 90's called "The Breed", but it was really good. Also, there was a movie called The Breed starring the scottish guy that was in the Highalnder series and Joaquim Woodbine. I was sorely disappointed in "The Queen of the Damned". They took a great book and completely messed it up! Marius was not Lestat's maker and that really irritated the crap out of me when they did that. Such wasted potential! And now that Anne has turned her life over to God and renounced Lestat(oh the horror) I guess we will never see another Lestat movie....le sigh.
