Music for the Music Makers
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:07 am »
Hey everybody-

I just released a mostly original Odetta tribute CD called "Blackeyed Susan" in September.
It comes in a reusable recycled wooden case made from discarded guitar wood and comes w/ a plantable memorial seed card (that you can plant in the box), some local food treats like local honey + tea and a $70 piece of SmartGlass jewelry, which is made from recycled soda + wine bottles.

I also just recorded + released a holiday song called "Christmas Lights (Christmas Lullaby)" last week.

A lot of you know all of that but I wanted to let you know that both projects partially benefit an organization called the Music Maker Relief Foundation. They give monthly stipends to elderly Blues, Americana + Roots musicians and help with medical bills, rent, etc,
They also record their music + fund their touring if they're able tour.
One artist never left his home state of Alabama (for anything), was living in destitution and MMRF recorded a record with him and put him on tour in Europe when he turned 82!

The CD Box set retails for $40 but for the month of December I'm including the Christmas download in the form of a download card in the boxes and, for every can (up to 10 cans) you bring into UC, you get $1 off the box. So 10 cans = $10 = a $30 CD Box Set

It makes a great gift and you actually can gift the necklace separately so it's like buying 2 gifts, plus you're supporting local music, our musical heritage, local artisans, local food and the environment since nothing in the package should ever wind up in the trash (even the "plastic" bag the jewelry is housed in is compostable).

Pics of the box are below!
FYI, the Music Maker pictured below is George Daniels and earlier this spring he went blind. A very interesting man, spent his youth as a cowboy, made rye whiskey for decades, played blues all his life. George receives a monthly stipend for sustenance from MMRF.

Thanks,

 O0[/b]

PPS Warning, it's not a happy song.

The box (and everything in it) is awesome!  And as a head-up, I'll need another one. Should make an excellent Christmas present for a musicphile I know...

It is a beautiful collection and such a lovely presentation.  I wish Tom had not broken my Smart Glass piece less than a month after I got it.

I did some pro-bono consulting to Music Maker Foundation several years ago -- they are a great organization with a great mission and worthy of support.

that's awesome, thanks for the endorsement. :)
i love organizations like this. i was a recipient of a grant about 6 years ago.
i broke my ankle and had to stop touring for 5 months to rehabilitate it b/c i (idiotically) stayed on the road for 2 months after i broke it. i really didn't have a choice though b/c i had no other source  of income besides playing,

but, i finally had to stop b/c i couldn't walk or put any pressure on it to even drive to my shows.
even being on a flight started to create unbearable swelling + pressure.
my ankle was almost the size of my upper thigh by the time i started to take care of it.  :(

since i was a full time musician (for at least 5 years before my accident) i qualified to have my bills paid for by an organization called Musicares, which is the non-profit arm of the Grammys.

i got everything taken care of (even my emergency room bill from the hospital in DC) for 5 months (rent + all utilities and my car insurance payment since it came up during my rehabilitation period).

the only reason i'm not contributing to Musicares is b/c Eric Clapton and James Taylor et al do benefits for them every year. :)
Music Makers is a little closer to "home" for me and is rarely the recipient of artist contributions.

So, I  O0 got a fabulous Mac for Christmas from my lovely wife (via BarbecueSteve THANK YOU!). I spent the day playing with it and made this "video". It is a first attempt so it's super basic but gets the point across a little better I think about the Music Makers...

Christmas Lullaby for the Music Makers...

NOTE:this is my 3rd version. :)
