How do you take your Kroger - Ghetto or Yuppie?
« on: January 15, 2012, 02:31 pm »
From a Facebook conversation - which Kroger is your preferred Kroger, the Edgewood one or the Skyhaven one? One might also say the Yuppie one or the Ghetto one.

But barring specific considerations like "I was already at Target" or "I also needed gas", if somebody says "go to Kroger and get me [a list of standard grocery items]", which one are you going to head to and why?

And for the sake of this discussion, don't tell us how Publix or Trader Joe's or wherever is a better store. Simple choice between the two.

Go.

I don't do a lot of Kroger shopping, but if I am going to use my bike, I head to Ghetto Kroger. My friends live right around the corner and can watch my bike for me. Even locked up at the store, it's not save in either Kroger location, really.
If I'm taking the bus or walking, I usually head to the ERD Kroger during "off" hours. I don't really find them much different, really.

Setting out from home, I'll normally go to Ghetto.  It's a little closer I think and parking is easier.

If I want a bigger selection though, I'll go to ERD.

I go to the Edgewood Kroger because I only go to Kroger if I have other shopping to do at Edgewood. If I regularly went somewhere near the ghetto Kroger, I would shop at that one, too. They are pretty much the same distance from my house. But Publix is closer than both of them, so that is my first choice for groceries.

Exactly the same with us.  Easier in/out at Ghetto.  Caveat:  We have our prescriptions at the ERD pharmacy so we have to go there to pick them up.

If you have an option, go for mail-order prescriptions. Generally you get a bigger supply at a smaller price.

Your rule just went out the window :) But seriously, isn't the "Yuppie" Kroger actually termed the "Racial Tension Kroger"? Let's get these names right.

Actually, I did go to the RTK a few weeks ago and was pretty impressed. Their service seems to have improved since 2 years ago... and it seems somehow larger... maybe because I'm so used to the small Publix on Ponce? Or because of their redesign... ? That's where Charley shops, and he wouldn't go back to Ghetto Kroger...

ERD all the way.  I've had too many unpleasant experiences at the Skyhaven one.  It's a stretch to get me to grocery shop happily to begin with.  Probably one of the biggest shocks moving to the south was the general atmosphere in grocery stores.

Speaking of culture shock, when we moved here there was still a grocery within easy walking distance at Memorial and Maynard. It had a metal detector at the front door, the produce was brown and the meat was grey. Then somebody tried to tell me there's no such thing as food inequality.

They are pretty much the same distance from my house. But Publix is closer than both of them, so that is my first choice for groceries.

What's interesting to me about the question is the Krogers are equidistant from East Atlanta (from Moreland and Glenwood it's 1.2 miles to either up/down Moreland). So if distance is about the same (ERD is .3 miles farther for me) and you don't have factors like picking up prescriptions, combining with a Target trip, etc., the choice is about other things.

Me, I absolutely hate dealing with the parking lot at ERD Kroger, and I find the intown douchebags I typically encounter there to be a lot more unpleasant than the "ghetto" people I typically encounter at Ghetto Kroger. That's not to say there aren't plenty of times (like Food Stamp Day) when I've ended up at Ghetto Kroger and wished I were dead. Ghetto Kroger is also just more laid back and less likely to be crowded and given that I often have an adorable little girl with me (not that I'm not super charming on my own) a lot of the staff there knows me and is very friendly (Pam in the deli, especially).

Unless I'm after something I know or suspect Ghetto Kroger doesn't have and ERD Kroger does, I'm going Ghetto.

Why the hell do they call ERD "Racial Tension Kroger"? The only tension I ever notice is from the Inman Park yuppies looking down on the Candler Park yuppies.

I do everything I can to avoid going to the grocery store. But if I HAVE to go, it's the Skyhaven Kroger.
