Bad news for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and other LTE phones

"Nokia Siemens Networks did some preliminary studies on LTE phone’s power drain versus their HSPA (3G) counterparts and found that LTE devices consume between 5 percent to 20 percent more than previous-generation phones, depending on the application used. Those numbers, however, seem conservative compared to the anecdotal evidence. In its review of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Engadget found that the Google Navigation running over the LTE network ate battery power faster than the Nexus’ car charger could restore it."

Do they not have 4G management?  I have a Nexus S 4G on Sprint, which uses WiMax currently.  I leave my 4G on and it "sleeps" when not in use.   For months I left it off and decided to test it by leaving it on, but saw no noticeable difference in battery life.

Navigation is a whole different matter.  Despite the fact that my phone's nav system is dead-on and very useful, I generally use my Garmin for GPS nav solely because of battery life issues.  My Garmin will last for a full 7 or 8 hour trip without having to plug it in.  If I left my phone in nav-mode, it would probably last about an hour (and maybe catch on fire 'cause it gets so damn hot when it's running).

We got them over in the UK to try something different from the iPhone. Bad idea. Both of our phones eat power at 6% per hour. Leave them uncharged overnight, they're dead in the morning. They stink.
