Does the pollen make you sick to your stomach?
« on: April 02, 2009, 10:31 am »
The headache I can live with and the stuffy nose I can control with medicine, but this time of year, the pollen also screws up my stomach. Am I the only one? And what do you do about it?

My husband has the same affliction. The Alavert tabs really helped him, tummy and all. When it doesn't cover enough, he's been taking Tagamet or Tums.

I don't have stomach problems, but my head feels like it weighs a ton.

Sometimes the drainage from my head will make me feel queasy especially in the morning.  Eating usually helps me.

Claritan or Alavert every morning. Then get the nose spray from your doctor called Nasonex.

I need to get some of these remedies. I've felt awful this week, just a general queasy feeling. Not enough to knock me down but enough to annoy the crap out of me all day long.

Yes, I have had that empty pit feeling in my stomach that makes me feel queasy. I think it's more from the draining watery snot that keeps filling up my tummy. I ate ice cream before going to bed last night, and I took some Benadryl. I can only take children's B'dryl, and a very small dose of it, but it clears up my head and helps me sleep like a rock. Today I just feel like cutting my head off, though, so maybe it's not such a great solution after all.

I'm getting the allergy shots, and they seem to be working.  Still a little something there but much, much less than normal

I don't think it makes me sick but I can taste it, which means it is very high.  Only a couple more weeks for this year.

haha, i actually think this WOULD be the best medicine..

is everyone that's expressed allergies from other parts of the country?  am i about the only native?  i have never one time in my life felt the effects of pollen.  i've never had a runny nose when everyone else does, or get a headache..

What gives?

My ancestors came from a cold, rainy land.  We had no blooming plants, just hard scrabble lives trying to get by in the bleak darkness.  We had no exposure to pollen in the air.  It is like blinding tear gas for you that are used to it.

so in other words, like getting a shot for measels.. if you were to lets say, not shut yourself up inside during pollen season go out into a bunch of fields and run thru all the ragweed (that pine tree pollen thats all over your car isn't the true allergen).. then it'd be like getting a flu shot, get your body used to it, then after one terrible year, you'd build up immunities to it.. true or false?

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. But that is the theory behind allergy shots, only in a much more controlled situation.

Allergies are the result of the immune system out of control, attacking harmless 'intruders'.

The the hygiene hypothesis states that a lack of early childhood exposure to infectious agents, microorganisms and parasites increases susceptibility to allergic diseases because the immune system never 'learns' what is good and what is bad for us.
