Whatcha Reading?
« on: May 31, 2007, 05:14 pm »
I'm bored.  I'm looking for new ideas.  So, what's everyone reading now?

I just finished book 10 of the Wheel of Time.  Robert Jordan had better not die before he completes the series or I'll kill him myself.

Pols, I'm waiting on Amazon to bring me your suggestions.  :)

Haha.  You so funny.  I bet keeping up with all of our inane, yet so amusing, chatter keeps your life too full to read books.  :)

I've been working on 'In Cold Blood' for a while.  I try to read when I fly, which means I get thru maybe 4 pages and fall asleep.  Recently picked up 'V for Vendetta' which I'll probably burn thru when I start, Alan Moore is one of my favorite writers.

Wow.  Those are pretty heavy for this time of year.  I'd set them aside until it rains again.  My hubby loved Freakonomics.

That's on my list.  I finished Elaine Pagels "The Gospel of Judas" not too long ago.  If you start reading about early Christianity you get a really different perspective on organized religion.  If only the Catholics hadn't killed it all off (disclaimer:  former Catholic, allowed to criticize!). Are you finding it thought provoking?  Do his assumptions/arguments stand up to scruntiny?

I've STARTED the following:

"Until I Find You" - John Irving
"The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" - Michael Chabon
"Krakatoa" - Simon Winchester

But who knows which of those I'll finish.  More likely is that I'll read about two or three other Koontz or King or other such fictions before I get through any of them.

It's a bit of a polemic, but hey, in me he's preaching to the choir (hehehe, pun intended).

Definitely a mirror of my thoughts; but found Dawkin's "The God Delusion" more thought-provoking.  I'm just glad to see something of an "ahtheist" movement afoot that is raising more critical awareness of the social and political negative repercussions of religion.  It can be faulted for so much, and I don't buy the arguments of the benefits it delivers.  But that would be a much, much, much, much, much longer post to discuss.  And better done in a jousting area or somewhere else where it's ok to spill blood . . .

Personally, I think we should go back to Druidism.  That would accomodate blood letting over differing opinions, right?

Just kidding. When forced to declare something, I say I'm a transcendentalist.  That shuts up most people right quick.  Unless they have a dictionary handy.

We are becoming an increasingly secular society and there's a reason for it.

I saw him doing the talk show rounds a few weeks ago.  Liked what he had to say, the book sounds right up my alley.
