Oooh, another trilogy I just read that was awesome was the Ferrol Sams trilogy about Porter Osborne, a boy growing up in GA during the 30's/40's..."Run with the Horsemen", "Whisper of the River", and "When all the World was Young"....REALLY good books, by a still-living Doctor down in Fayetteville.
i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE those books. i am interested in any book that talks about late-1800's to early-1900's georgia. i also love me some flannery o'connor. and of course, gone with the wind is one of my all-time favorites.

"Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azzerad. It's a history of the early American Indie rock underground. Focuses mainly on the american punk bands of the early 80's (Black Flag, Minutemen, Minor Threat), but also includes some of the more (eventually) popular bands like Mudhoney, Replacements, Sonic Youth & Dinosaur Jr. Really interesting read for music fans. Also an easy one to read in conjunction with other books, as it's split up into chapters based on the individual bands.
another great choice. have you read dance of days? seen the new "american hardcore" or "punk: attitude" dvds?

and for those of you that wanna fuck shit up, one of my favorite books is days of war, nights of love.

Yup - there's an O'Connor book on my stack as well. To be honest, I've only read "Wiseblood", and a couple short stories. I DID visit her house over in Milledgeville, though. Kinda fun.

Can't really say I'm a "Gone With the Wind" fan though. Boooooooorrrrrring.

Been meaning to watch that "American Hardcore" doc....don't know the "Punk:Attitude"...Netflix, here I come.

I read Freakanomics and it was like chewing Wonder Bread. A bunch of useless factoids and an overwinded and overexamined explanation of popular statitstics. I really liked "The Longtail." Cant remember the author--the guy who edits Wired magazine. It talks about the new paradigm in ecnomonics---aggregates of niche markets over blockbuster hits.

"God is not Great:  How Religion Poisons Everything".  Christopher Hitchens.

Discuss.

So want to read that... (just started reading "Blink").  Maybe we should start a book exchange!

"Until I Find You" - John Irving

Loved it.  The amazon reviews aren't great, but I thought it was.

Still reading "Until I find you"  by John Irving. That one is turning out to be something of an effort.

Agreed...his last few have been disappointments ("Fourth Hand", "Widow For One Year").  I've had real trouble getting involved like I did with "Prayer for Owen Meany", "Cider House Rules", "Hotel New Hampshire" and "Setting Free the Bears"...my favorite is still "Water-Method Man".

Thanks for the recommendation on "Water-Method Man"... will check it out.  I couldn't get into "Widow for one Year" either, fwiw.  "Until I Find You" was kind of slow, but there was something about it I just loved.  I read it in Hawaii last year on vacation and remember laughing a LOT reading it.  The main character was very good - and all the stuff that happened when he was in school was funny shit.  I think my favorite book of all times was "Prayer for Owen Meany"...

Just finished "Forever Odd"  by Dean Koontz
and have a few chapters left in "Exodus" Leon Uris.

I'm with Groov8e, I tend to finish off Koontz before I finish off the books requiring thought.

I gave up on that series somewhere around book 5 or 6.  I can't even remember now...
What's this one?  Book 20?

Finally finished GWTW.  Lots of sly humor mixed in with the boring sociopolitical parts.  Now I want to open a junk shop named "Caveat Emptorium"! <!D
