The owner also owns the vacant lot between the brick building and the used car lot.  Earlier this week they applied to consolidate the two properties.

No building permits have been issued recently.

New windows are in all but (i think one) of the old gaping holes. Looks pretty good.

That's what it said on the permit (which didn't mention windows), but I suppose a Java gallery might have an office in there somewhere.

work seems to be chugging along on the Hodgepodge Coffee House and Gallery... maybe they won't be selling evergreens there this year.

Northstar trees knew about the coffeehouse last year and were planning on looking for another spot this year. They had really wanted to try and stay in EAV...

Did they look across the street? I have to figure the guy who isn't having a QT built there would be pretty open to some short-term-lease income.

+1
Easy access onto Hall Street, so you don't dump your tree trying to back up onto Moreland Ave.
Or maybe they're happy and content, living their little donut lives until the monstrous humans come along to rip their doughy flesh open with their teeth, sucking up their jelly innards.

Northstar posted on facebook last week that they hope the parking lot gets finished in time. Maybe they'll be in their old spot this year?

Another stop in my continuing quest to find good brewed coffee nearby.

Hodgepodge Coffeehouse and Gallery opening Jan 1 in East Atlanta
Posted by Besha Rodell @BeshaRodell on Tue, Dec 6, 2011 at 2:16 PM

Well my 'hood just keeps getting more caffeinated. First it was Octane Grant Park, and now Hodgepodge Coffeehouse and Gallery, opening on Moreland Ave in a super cool building that's sat empty for years, catty corner from Little Azio's and Morelli's. The spot will serve as a retail outlet for Cupcake Crusade, an already operating cupcake company. From the press release:

Hodgepodge Coffeehouse and Gallery plans to open its doors in January 2012 and offer more than gourmet coffee, this establishment is devoted to being a community-focused and environmentally conscious place for artists, cupcake and coffee lovers.

They will serve Batdorf & Bronson coffee. The question is, can a coffeehouse survive in this location? There have been a number of cafes in the now-vacant spot in the Ormewood Square shopping center that faces Ormewood Ave, next to Lucky Exchange. Perhaps the fact that those spots were not visible from Moreland made a difference, but I for one miss the drive-through coffee option so close to my house. The other factor was most likely that over the years it seemed as though very few people who worked in those cafes actually knew what they were doing. It was kind of impossible to get a decent coffee drink, for instance. Hopefully the folks at Hodgepodge, which look as though they're taking their coffee very seriously, will survive and thrive.

OMG! ... cupcakes.

I'll be interested to check the place out. Joe's will still be my strong preference and still closer to me, but great to see some life right there. And lots of stuff besides coffee there, it seems. Of course, the haphazardly strewn cars from the crap used car lot there will become more of an issue once there's actually a business on that block people might want to walk to.

Yeah...almost every day the fuckers drive a car right up onto the sidewalk on the corner.  Frankly, I'm amazed they can actually stay in business in that spot.

It's an eyesore crying out for redevelopment.   ;D
