An offshoot of the "
School" thread from a while back - I'm looking closely again at the
Georgia Cyber Academy as we think about Kindergarten this fall. And I'm curious if there are others with kids heading to Kindergarten who would potentially be interested in this kind of approach to school. It's probably also appropriate to open this to parents of kids in 1st and 2nd grade (maybe older as well) since the social sort of aspects aren't really limited to grade level.
And of course the Buzz doesn't represent the full range of people I know in this position, but it's a good starting point to gauge interest and discuss.
So just on its face as an individual choice, there are things that really intrigue me about the GCA model. It's a lot more than "homeschool support" since they have specific teachers assigned, organized lesson plans, etc. It does seem a lot more like a virtual school than just a way to manage homeschooling. The flexibility, ability to progress at your kid's own pace, etc. is really appealing (hmm, no reason why we shouldn't go down to Florida and learn this stuff next week, right?)
But the intrigue comes in the potential to leverage multiple families being enrolled, which would advance the socialization elements, probably help learning, take some pressure off individual parents, etc. I really see it as potentially the new "best way" to get at education if it's done more on a community level than just individually. I like a whole lot about the concept.
So anybody here interested in getting together to kick around ideas based on having our kids enrolled in the GCA? I'll be the first to say this is one of several options I'm considering and I know ultimate decisions will be driven by what concrete options ultimately are in play for everybody (i.e. I know this is something you'd be considering if you don't like the sure-fire options in front of you and don't know that you'll have a spot in the school or schools you'd be happy with - and might well bail on this plan altogether if and when a spot opens up at the place you'd like to be. Same with us).
