EAV Secession?
« on: January 30, 2012, 05:46 pm »
I've been hearing a lot about my former neighborhood, Brookhaven, incorporating into a separate city from DeKalb County in order to provide better services at lower tax rates.  Whatever the merits of that particular proposal, it does seem to me that the EAV area gets pretty screwed by the City of Atlanta, and those parts that are in Unincorporated DeKalb get screwed even harder by DeKalb County.

So I thought I'd throw it out there - would you support the EAV area (or at least the area within DeKalb County) leaving the City of Atlanta to form a new municipality?  [In a purely hypothetical sense, I realize that the likelihood of it ever happening is about one in a million].

Personally, I think I would support it in order to have more local control over the police force, school system (assuming it went so far as to have a local school system), and municipal bureaucracy.  Not convinced it would reduce taxes, though.

de-annexing from a city is pretty difficult, as I understand it.  I think more would be gained from bringing more of uniDeK into COA... especially Braeburn Circle and other areas that you can't get to without passing through the City.

Oh, I'm sure this will never happen, and adding Braeburn is much more likely scenario.  I was just curious if anyone else ever thought about it because of their frustration with CoA.

I don't have that much frustration with Atlanta, I guess. I think I'd have more frustration with Mayor Clue trying to meet the outrageous demands of his neighbors with no money.

As someone who is a homeowner in this area, how would I benefit from this?

by "this area" I'm going to assume you are just outside of the city limits.

1) higher resell value due to being zoned for Burgess Peterson (the next Mary Lin) and Maynard Jackson (The next Grady High)

2) possibly better cohesive police coverage and ability to join EASP

And higher taxes.  And I have to deal with Trinity Street instead of Decatur for any zoning issues.
I don't see any benefits. Especially since I am not planning on having children here, even if I were in CofA.
I am on the line.  Literally.  I'd hate to be annexed.  I wonder if the other residents in my uni area would agree or disagree with me.

I can be very frustrated with cOfa but give me the ADP over the DPD any day.

Question I have and pardon my not knowing, but when I call the police they talk to me for a sec and then figure out what address I'm calling from and they tell me they have to transfer me to Dekalb and I have to start my conversation all over again. Kinda frustrating especially if it was ever a serious emergency. Anyone else ever have this problem?

Yeah, I've run into that while reporting an alarm on Braeburn.  I live off Clifton (CoA), but Braeburn is Unincorporated DeKalb even though you can't get to it except from CofA.  It really is frustrating, especially since I'm sure that the bad guys are aware of this and thus hit up Braeburn pretty frequently.

If you're in the city and want to reach 911 from a cell phone, you should call 404.658.6666. If you just call 911 on a cell, you're getting the jurisdiction of the tower you connect to. Not sure if there's a direct number for DeKalb 911. Haven't ever seen somebody mention it.

Yes.
1.  Dial 911
2.  Ask for Dekalb County (in 7 years, I've hit them first maybe twice in twenty calls).
Or maybe they're happy and content, living their little donut lives until the monstrous humans come along to rip their doughy flesh open with their teeth, sucking up their jelly innards.

Are you not considered City of Atlanta?

Yes, except I'm COA and always get DPD on the phone first. It's extra fun when you get put on hold for both agencies.

Not sure what that means. I live in the city, yes.
