How much, roughly, to pop out a dormer?
« on: January 04, 2012, 08:26 pm »
I'm about to get estimates on a minimal kitchen reno (new counters, backsplash) and am thinking about asking people to also bid on another project-- turning my attic into a better space.  I'd need to pop out a shed dormer, and then add a closet and small bathroom.

I've seen so many houses like this around here, so I thought people might be able to give me some sense of what kind of money I'm looking at.  If the bathroom is directly above another bathroom?  Not planning on fancy tile or clwfoot tubs. Just a basic bathroom, maybe with just a shower stall.

ANyone with expert advice?

Also love to hear if anyone has used anyone great for a project like this. I'm on a tight budget.

Thanks!

I can't exactly answer your question, but I can say  that whoever can will need to see how your roof is structured. If you can pop your head into the attic and take a couple pictures of the framing, it would help.

It really depends. You should call some folks and get estimates.

If you do get some estimates, would you mind sharing?  I've had the same question.

Sure!

The guy who did my shed is coming on Sat to give me an estimate. Will let you know.

It's been over two years since we had our bathroon redone and I have no idea of his availability, but if you are looking for multiple estimates I can share my recommendation.

Sounds like a fun project!  I've never used SawHorse, but I'm still hoping to win that free bathroom makeover that I recently obsessed about (winner announced this weekend).  Anyhow, I've seen their signs up throughout the area, and their gallery online is gorgeous (although some of it isn't my taste).  I would check them out: http://www.sawhorse.net/

In my opinion, if this were my house and my project, I may be willing to pay more than what I'd normally want to pay due to the structural issues involved, permitting necessary, etc.  In other words, I wouldn't hire my handyman for this project on my house.
