Sandcrab: "Sealed and Ventilated" - What does that mean?

The contractor laid perforated pipes on top of the dirt, hooked up to a tiny fan that blows 27/7.  Over that was laid heavy-duty sealed tarps.  This not only vents the radon out, but also the rising dampness that would otherwise form mildew under the tarp.

This is new to me. Thanks for explaining!!

Have not located any test kits yet, but will ask around some more.

I've already mailed mine in for results.  Not sure how long it'll take.  Also not sure what'll have to happen if I get positive results back.  I'm not interested in putting a lot of money into the house at this point.

I thought it specifically was not a concern down here because so few homes have basements?

we had the radon test done before we bought our house, and the levels were really high. the sellers tested as well and found similar results, so they installed something similar to sandcrab's situation. (^__^)

We got our results back a week or two ago.  Average indoor levels are 1.3.  Recommended action if it gets to 4.0 or higher.  Our reading was 1.7...so just barely above average but nothing we have to do anything about.

Has anyone mentioned that one of the most common sources of radon inside homes is the fancy granite countertops everyone seems to love installing?

That's a good insight; despite knowing that the radon danger in Dekalb comes from the granite domes we live on top of, I'd never thought about the implications for granite countertops.

I suppose it's a good reason to pick quartz or glass instead for your fancy countertop!
