and now... back to Chazz
« on: January 15, 2012, 09:34 am »
So while walking by Flat Shoals and Glenwood, I noticed a large pile of lumber inside of Chazz and the door was open, so I popped my head in, and the carpenter in was a super nice guy who invited us in to take a look and give us the full skinny.  He told us that 529 has leased the space and will be removing the wall between the two (apparently, it was all one space originally) and more than doubling their square footage, adding a second stage, another bar, new restrooms, building out an upstairs green room for bands and an office for the management.

They had already removed all the old kitchen equipment that was left behind, removed the low drop ceiling, and rebuilt the subfloor, which was apparently so rotted that the stove almost fell through into the crawl space below. Didn't have a timeline for completion, but he did say that some major changes will be coming in the next couple of weeks that will be noticeable improvements to the exterior of the building as well.

That's awesome!   <:)~  I'm not their target demographic but they do occasionally have some bands I like.  More space and another bar are very needed.  I'm all for anything that improves the live music scene in the village.

Plus One. I'm also not in the customer base, but clearly they're hit on a good idea and are doing well. Those spaces need to be together; Chazz especially is too small to really operate as a stand-alone full-service restaurant. The 529 expansion removes a revolving-door commercial vacancy and will give more space to a thriving business. Good stuff there.

Currently the room is my favorite size venue to see shows, but I'm glad Chris is successful enough to expand.  I bet it'll be pretty awesome although not as cozy.

Well, they said they are not replacing the current stage, although it will not be the main stage anymore.  They are going to set up the space so that the stages are opposite each other, so one band can be loading out or setting up on one stage while another is performing on the other.

He also told us that they have alot of interest from touring acts to perform at 529 that they would love to get, but that they usually end up booked somewhere else in town because 529 is just not big enough to accomodate them.  They won't be as large as the Earl, but will be big enough to catch some of the acts they are missing out on now.

My understanding is the final capacity will be the same as the Earl's.

We should lobby for them to name that second stage area the "NBTC" (now back to Chazz) stage.

That's what I thought when I read the part about the rotting floor.
