Graveyard Basement Impressions
« on: March 29, 2011, 11:44 am »
The Graveyard had their basement open on Saturday night and I was a little shocked.  Graveyard has done some things to spark interest in our humble village (as a single guy I thank them).  Alcohol may be clouding my recollection of the space and my impressions that night, but the basement may signal a turning point in EAVs evolution as an entertainment hub for those outside of the traditional EA guard.

For those that have not been (not many since I don’t think I’ve seen anyone write about it), I’ll describe it.  It has a bit of a midtown club feel to it, with hipsters rather the typical midtown douchtard, and very open.  It has a large elevated dance floor as the focal point.  Between the dance floor and the large L shaped bar is a significant open space for onlookers.  On the narrow side of the wrap around bar were 4 or 5 cozy high top booths.

We won’t be Buckhead with 5 bachelorette parties roaming through the place every hour any time soon.  The heart and flavor of the village will remain grounded with the old guard in the Flat Iron, The EARL, ESL, Mary’s and Gravity. But with our solid base of other entertainment and dining options (Holy Taco and Midway I’m looking at you and iLounge appears to be taking hold), the Glenwood re-opening as a more accommodating space, 529 rumored expansion and the Antique market Gastro Pub rumors……Graveyard’s basement may be the first chip in re-defining what the entertainment experience is in East Atlanta and may go a long ways to how outsiders feel about la cosa nostra (our thing).

So for those that have been there, is this a space that is out of place for EAV (but will do well with the clientele that Graveyard has)? or it’s existence in the village and the rumored changes have a broader impact? Or is this just continued evolution that I’m too much of a newby (5 years) in the neighborhood to gain context of?

I got to have a peek when I was there last week, and it is an AMAZING space.  the first thing I thought was "HOLY CRAP"--the second was "this would be an amazing space for private events"  (although I dare not even think of what that might cost!)  they've done a great job from what I was able to see.  The only thing is that there won't be food service downstairs b/c of the whole "the kitchen is upstairs" thing, but really...who cares!? ;)     kudos, guys!

I'm pretty excited!  :D. Philip insisted on going big on the sound system to be able to bring in national acts. I'm so happy they're so happy with how it's turning out. They have a green room and actually have to follow those band "lists" like green MnMs and stuff. Philip is promoting the crap out of it so I hope it does reach the level they're reaching for. Yay!!!  Maybe if it does super well EAV will indeed continue to grow as a music destination (Earl, 529) and maybe someone will jump on the Icehouse!

I've heard a rumor that Gravity is going to be using their basement for live music as well.  Anyone heard this, or is it likely just confusion with the new Graveyard location?

"national acts" as in bands? or big name DJs? Put another way, will this be a good place to get one's oontz-oontz on?

Would like to know too.  What's the capacity, who's going to be booking (I'll ask for a second time)?

What is the capacity, may I ask. The sound system is not so much as important in Atlanta as is capacity for inviting "national acts" it's been a problem at many local clubs. The one thing the Ice House (the old Point...) location had was capacity (yes, it lacked the architecture to do it's sound system justice...) - we've found it quite difficult sometimes to meet the financial needs of touring bands vs. the cost of a ticket that most people are willing to pay to make sure all costs are covered. A great medium size venue is really needed this side "of the tracks"...I like that it sounds to be a nice space too, that is also much needed. Lennys was  a good size, but I was not in love with the space.

Philip would know. I have no clue!  The space is around 5000 square feet.

Capacity is about the same as the EARL then, close to 250 people I would assume.

The EARL's music room's gotta be around 2500 sq. ft. or less.

250, and Philip and his team.

Thanks Sox.

Earl is about 200-250 KD. I was taking into account that 5000 square feet accounts for much in a new space and is not just open floor, especially if they have more bar space than the EARL does, which would make sense....plus green room space (you account for that at the EARL the place is much larger...)
