The Graveyard had their basement open on Saturday night and I was a little shocked. Graveyard has done some things to spark interest in our humble village (as a single guy I thank them). Alcohol may be clouding my recollection of the space and my impressions that night, but the basement may signal a turning point in EAVs evolution as an entertainment hub for those outside of the traditional EA guard.
For those that have not been (not many since I don’t think I’ve seen anyone write about it), I’ll describe it. It has a bit of a midtown club feel to it, with hipsters rather the typical midtown douchtard, and very open. It has a large elevated dance floor as the focal point. Between the dance floor and the large L shaped bar is a significant open space for onlookers. On the narrow side of the wrap around bar were 4 or 5 cozy high top booths.
We won’t be Buckhead with 5 bachelorette parties roaming through the place every hour any time soon. The heart and flavor of the village will remain grounded with the old guard in the Flat Iron, The EARL, ESL, Mary’s and Gravity. But with our solid base of other entertainment and dining options (Holy Taco and Midway I’m looking at you and iLounge appears to be taking hold), the Glenwood re-opening as a more accommodating space, 529 rumored expansion and the Antique market Gastro Pub rumors……Graveyard’s basement may be the first chip in re-defining what the entertainment experience is in East Atlanta and may go a long ways to how outsiders feel about la cosa nostra (our thing).
So for those that have been there, is this a space that is out of place for EAV (but will do well with the clientele that Graveyard has)? or it’s existence in the village and the rumored changes have a broader impact? Or is this just continued evolution that I’m too much of a newby (5 years) in the neighborhood to gain context of?
