I think civil forfeiture is entirely independent of criminal charges, which is why they can (and do) take your shit on slight evidence that it might be related to something you might or might not one day be charged with. Seriously.

Civil forfeiture would only apply to property that he owns (a vast oversimplification).  Gravity was leased.  It's possible that the government can try to take the property of the owner, but unlikely unless there's drug or prostitution allegations that specifically allows for seizing the property of innocent third parties.

Not to mention, none of the property from within the Gravity was seized. It was all stuck outside.

I doubt this goes any further than he screwed everybody he knew and left everybody with empty hands and shit loads of promises.

I'm a bit confused by who's who in this melodrama, but anyone know if his business partners were aware of his pending incarceration?  I'm wondering if his lease default (and subsequent eviction) was part of a larger plan of winding up his business affairs before going to prison.  Yes, it's totally douchey to do it in a hidden way, but at least it's more understandable than him simply absconding.

I'd be surprised if this is the case. From what I can figure, he pled guilty to the charges before ever even buying Gravity. If his goal was to wind up his businesses before getting the book, why would he buy a new bar?

That makes sense.  Might be he was looking to shelter assets or funnel cash through the bar, though that's complete and total speculation.  I just can't think of another reason why he'd purchase an operating bar after pleading guilty to a federal offense, especially since his plea agreement virtually guarantees a significant period of incarceration.

Yeah, money laundering was my guess...but I have literally no evidence to support that.

The place was always a dump but at least years ago it was a charming dump with a great jukebox. Sitting in a shithole listening to  Europe's The Final Countdown isnt quite the same.

Last time I was in there, some 19 year old drunk bimbo was playing Kei$ha over and over again on the jukebox.  I hate those internet jukebox things.  Some people are too dumb to decide what everyone at the bar has to listen to.  I don't care if you do have a dollar for the machine.

Well at least he consistently paid me! Although, I'm pretty much the reason that place was still in business...
Glad for you and you just keep telling yourself that.
Just had a meeting with the 'other owners' and it is all it appears to be and nothing more.  He screwed a bunch of people and if any of you can find a shred of paperwork with his name on it, go for it.

Well, considering that the entire time Slim owned the place, it did terrible business, and Tuesdays was their biggest night, I'd say it's pretty accurate that my trivia did a lot to keep that place afloat. Slim constantly told me that he would make his entire week off of just one Tuesday

I just heard the other day that some new owners (people I have met casually 3-4 times) have picked up the lease. No idea on the direction yet but I will update when I hear more.
