We (me and Mellamur) helped the former proposed BBQ place look at this location. The building needs a lot of work (a serious top to bottom rehab, if not a full rebuild, although the bones seemed to be pretty structurally intact), but it has great visibility, sufficient parking for code, good access (there's access off of Glenwood and off of Flat Shoals, although someone dumped fill at the Flat Shoals access point, but the curb cut is still there). There's also a pylon sign on the site. This would be an awesome location for a casual restaurant. A Mellow Mushroom would rock there.

Fuck Mellow Mushroom. I really have no use for a pizza chain in the Village. Go put that crap in ERD or something. I'm really displeased that barbecue didn't work out there because middle school dick humor aside I think Boners would have been a great fit for the Village and barbecue is something we could really use and are sorely lacking.

Co-signed.  I was avoiding going there though, until it was apparent that this was really going to happen, which is starting to seem unlikely.

I got a really cool recipe for a cauliflower pizza crust that is gluten free.

I personally think their pizza is gross (soggy, wet, topping laden) but think they would be good in that spot. Boners would have been better, I agree, but I'm not anti-Mellow Mushroom.  It would bring in some good traffic.

So would just about any crappy chain restaurant. I'm anti-crappy-chain-restaurant in the Village.

Businesses in expansion mode offer products that at least some people enjoy.  I've eaten at Mellow Mushroom several times and found the pizza to be acceptable.  I'm for re-development of a crappy abandoned derelict building in the heart of the Village, chain or not.

A chain has access to money that most start ups don't. It's challenging finding an investor willing to plop down a couple million to help someone's dream be realized. Boners would have been great in that spot.  :'(

This.

An independent investor will not likely have the assets, credit, bank collateral, etc. to permit, renovate and operate a building and lot of that size and condition.  Boners would have been fantastic.  I'd still take a Mellow Mushroom. It's a good chain (everyone gets all misty eyed about Chick Fil A; I personally think Mellow Mushroom is a preferable chain restaurant). That space is tough and my thoughts come directly from that fact. A regional chain with assets and the actual ability to open in that space would be fine with me.  I may have a different opinion if we were discussing a different space.  Or not.  :(~

exactly!   sorry, but bringing some corporate dollars (as much as it minimizes the cute indy feel of the village) might be a good thing.  get an economy going, and then watch it diversify further on a more solid foundation.  more stable jobs (b/c face it, ya'll--the restaurant biz is a high turnover industry in the best of times, and somewhere that has the capital to put into it to keep giving people paychecks for as long as the doors stay open is a GOOD THING), a bit more traffic to bring money into the biz' that ARE indy, and could perhaps put some more money into building up and refurbing other store fronts and business zoned properties...

ok...so we'd rather stand our ground 100% and shoot ourselves in the foot, why!?!?!?   dunno about you, my dears, but their money is just as green to me!

Tell that to the owners and staff at Grant Central.
Or maybe they're happy and content, living their little donut lives until the monstrous humans come along to rip their doughy flesh open with their teeth, sucking up their jelly innards.

Ah, but at the end of the day, the product will tell the tale. My dollars already go to Urban Pie.

How about we just raze the entire Village and pitch Wal-Mart on a SuperCenter? They've got the money, it'll bring a lot of traffic, lots of people enjoy Wal-Mart's Everyday Low PricesTM. And their money is bright, bright green.

Personally, as it stands, without Mellow Mushroom I have 0 chances of any pie in my favor. Grant Central can make (or get and have on hand) some crusts, and a dedicated paddle for gluten free and I'm there. If not, it would really be nice to have something. Both Holy Taco and Tomatillos are fantastic with this. Another place or two and this neighborhood would be a mecca for those who need to eat without wheat (and gluten).

Yes, Ken!  That's exactly what I was saying!  You nailed it!!  Absolutely black and white! Rip down the Village and put up a Wal-Mart!  It's uncanny how well you read me there!
