So I can get crucified for standing up for someone else who's getting bullied?

Are we bullying?  8) Just a little neighborhood snark on the buzz-o-snark, no bullying intended, just lively debate.
Eh, I just felt like Jack was getting a lot of shit for what seemed like a reasonable question (which has, at least in my eyes, been answered pretty well now).
You my G, G! No worries.
Anyway, I've seen you in person, I could neither crucify you nor bully you without getting thrown a royal ass-whuppin.
Ask my wife, she'll tell you I'm just a big teddy bear.

There's no question you're paying a premium, but what are you paying the premium for?  Is it convenience, quality of ingredients, size of the sandwich, or something else?  The answer is likely a mixture of all of those factors.

Or, perhaps it's the privledge of supporting your neighborhood with your hard earned cash rather than a stranger 20 minutes away who couldn't give two shits about East Atlanta...
So I can get crucified for standing up for someone else who's getting bullied?  I never said $4 was unreasonable.  I was just supporting Jack's right to question it after a number of people jumped on him for doing so.

Get off your damn high horse.

But, I was agreeing with you...  :(~
Sorry if it was worded poorly so you didn't catch that...

Actually maybe I wasn't agreeing with you, but I thought I was - or was just adding to the conversation. My point was: I want to see our local businesses do well, and for me it is worth spending the additional money.
I think what got me riled up was the implication that I didn't want the same thing, or feel the same way.

For example, I buy by my food for my kitties at Park Pet even though I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere. To me, it wouldn't be the few cents per can I could save to see a place like Park Pet go out of business.
I do much the same as well, to a point.  I'm not going to fork over $30+ for the exact same bag of cat litter that I can get for $16 at Petsmart.  I'll support local businesses as long as they remain reasonably competitive, but when I'm paying nearly double what I'd pay for the same thing somewhere else, I have a hard time justifying that purchase.  In the case of banh mi, $1-2 isn't much for the convenience of the village and superior ingredients, but if I'm buying 25 sandwiches to bring to a party, I'm probably heading up to Chamblee.

Agreed!

I don't think anyone is hating on Buford Hwy and it's many (thrifty) delicacies.  Rather why make the drive if you can get something close to the real thing locally if it cost a small amount more?  I think So Ba's pho falls into this category as well.

This thread is everything that sucks about the Buzz. If $4 is too much for you, fine, you made you goddamn point 5 pages ago. Now shut the fuck up and don't go. Ditto if you hate the paint. I don't think even the Tomatillas thread went on about tasteless food this long. And at least that had the benefit of multiple items to argue over.

That we can speak frankly with each other, air what each of us likes and doesn't, discuss, ponder, explore, and not be expected to all come to the same resolution or conclusion (or even necessarily draw a public conclusion) is what's demonstrated by this thread and what is solidly useful about the buzz.

I hear the food at We Suki Suki is pretty bland ...

I also hear their beer list sucks. And they're roping off a big section of the parking behind their space ...

Or similarly, you could buy a Mcdonald's burger (for what? I have no idea) and get a burger of crappy quality, with little real food value for a low mass produced price.

And I could even get a toy with it!

One of the questions you might raise is the quality of ingredience We Suki Suki use. Perhaps they are using locally made, non GMO tofu, high quality breads and other ingredience, locally produced milks. I have no idea, but some of these products made on a small scale, by hand just cost more because more care goes into them, they are fresher and less processed. It would be a good dialog to open with the owner. I just need to run over there later and get my vietnamese coffee bubble tea!!!
I'm not saying the price is unreasonable - I'd almost certainly pay $4 for a good banh mi just down the street over driving for an hour to save $1.50.  That said, I don't think it's unreasonable for Jack to question why they cost so much more (and for the record, I think Lee's Bakery has 'em for $2, which is where I got that number from).  $1.50 per sandwich sounds like a lot for just the cost of the space they're operating out of.  Another factor could be buying vs. baking the bread (pretty sure the ice cream shop didn't have ovens).

There's no question you're paying a premium, but what are you paying the premium for?  Is it convenience, quality of ingredients, size of the sandwich, or something else?  The answer is likely a mixture of all of those factors.

That's why you can just go in and ask! Q is probably way too busy to be on here answering our rediculous questions and looking at a rediculously long thread. But heck, you people are doing a great job of advertising to every Buzzer logged in.   :)% !!!

Well hot dog, I guess I will jump into this because, well, I've got a lot of free time on my hands right now.

I really enjoyed the sandwiches that I got at We Suki Suki. Q is lovely and while a little all over the place (seriously, that woman vibrates with energy), she makes a mean sandwich and is so friendly and sweet -- I actually really enjoyed talking to her during the wait for my sandwich. She earned my money and then some.

I like the little invisible wall around the village and it keeps me in quite often, that is not to say that I don't enjoy a Buford Highway excursion, it's just that I don't get out there that often so I don't really know where to go or what I am doing. If Fig and/or Dr. Phil wanna take a field trip out there and willing to let me join along for the ride (ride, not drive, get anxious when I drive somewhere I am not familiar with) then I will be more than happy to go. Right now though, I am happy to have someplace local to satiate my cravings.

Q does use local organic ingredients so that is going to drive up the cost a bit. But it's not like you are paying Urban Cannibal prices. It's $4 for a filling sandwich from a very sweet and chatty lady. The appearance of the store right now? Eh, I say give the woman a minute. Not everyone can open up a restaurant with the financial backing that Elder Tree had. It's a work in progress.

So, to conclude -- I just repeated a lot of what others have already said, I want to be invited on the next Buford Highway field trip, Q is quite sweet and lovely, and if anyone is being bullied you can come to me for a hug.  o%o

Wow, I just got on line and thought I would take a look around the BUZZ and this is what I see. I (Calavino) would like to say first, Q and her boys have been eating at our store for the past year so this is no reflection on her only what you just said. I have said before and I will say again, It takes 3 to 4 $3/4 tacos/sliders to make one of my sandwiches if that, sometimes, if you break them down, even more than that. Now, I guess I have to add to the list that if you take any bahn mi from any where and break it down meat/filling/bread ratio and set it on a scale next to mine (on average over a pound each at least, some of them are two pounds when all is said and done) you would have a sumo wrestler next to say, a samuri, still muscular, but, a lot leaner when it comes to the filling. I charge 8.99 for a sandwich with berkshire pork, smoked gouda cherry peppers and apple horseradish sauce on H&F bread and only $6.99 for a house roasted(about 1/2lb) meat sandwich with organic mixed greens, organic tomato and onion with a bag of zapps or dirty chips....none of this is cheap and I charge exactly what a restaurant is supposed to charge based on food cost percentages. A bahn mi is basically a couple of thin slices of pate (I make pate, I know how much it cost) with some slaw/veggies on very good but very big bread. That, does not cost a lot to make and therefore does not cost a lot to purchase. Now, again, nothing towards Q, just a defense of our business against this unnecessary post about our prices, I know our rent and labor costs compared to (because I know how much it is) the rent of the 400 sq ft next door. Her prices are in line for what she sells and her overhead, ours are in line with what we sell and our overhead. Show me someone that makes and sells what I make for $4 out of a space 4 times as big and 4 times higher rent, 4 times higher utilities and with actual full time labor costs and I will show you someone out of business in a month or, someone with a trust fund.

And, really, have you had sandwiches at other places similar to UC? We have, and I can tell you, we do not charge what they charge and there is a lot more between the slices here than most places like ours. We have paid $10.00 for a tuna on stale white with wilted iceberg and then paid extra for a bag of lays, we have paid $12.00 for roast beef 1/4lb at best with a slice of cheddar and a thin layer of mayo on a small roll and then an extra $4 for 4oz of under cooked under seasoned potato salad at another place. And, then there is this, how much is a burger and fries anywhere in the village? Is it really cheaper that what I make? Because, that is about as close as you are going to get  if you are going to compare how much food you actually get for your dollar. I am proud of what I/we do here and I/we work my/our ass/es off keeping these doors open in this neighborhood, so.......we have done a lot for the Eav and, by the way, we have worked really hard to not step on any toes by not selling what our neighbors sell, we do not sell books because we have a book store, we do not sell kitcheny gifts or cards or candles because we have a gift store down the street, what we do have in store we take in on consignment from those stores so that they will still get the money but we still have things we are expected to sell in our type of store, we do not sell coffee except on the weekends because we have a neighborhood coffee shop............

Doria here...
I'd really love for you to clarify this statement b/c it sounds like you're saying we're expensive.

If so, we're pretty frustrated by it and can't let it "slip by" and have it perpetuated that we're "the expensive place"...not after how hard we've worked to keep our prices reasonable despite rising food costs from every segment of the industry because of idiotic immigration laws that have caused food to rot on the vine from here to Alabama. Things that you get for free (e.g. onions, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos, cucumbers), things you take for granted and would have an absolute conniption fit if we started charging for, have all gone up 15-25% in the last 8 months but none of that has been rolled into our prices--and it's not just us taking the hit but a bunch of small businesses that opt to lose money rather than customers hoping things will get better.

And...

1. We don't make the same sandwiches as Q so, no, you're not going to pay the same. Our sandwiches are bigger. Apples and Oranges.

2. If you can't pay 6.99 for a house roasted local berkshire pork sandwich on local bread from one of the top bakeries in the country (which is baked to order daily and delivered fresh everyday to our store), that also comes w/ a decent sized bag of premium chips (Zapp's or Dirty Chips) as opposed to a mini bag of lays or fritos AND that's hand sliced and assembled by a chef with 20 years experience who works 6 days a week as opposed to a part time kid right out of high school who could care less about your food, then you shouldn't be eating out...anywhere...ever.

You could have easily said a million other businesses in the city but instead you chose to use us as an example (a bad example), a business next door to the Q's place, a business in your community, whose business practices benefit your immediate community b/c we use other local small businesses and a business with owners who are on this board everyday.

Why is that? What was your point?

Inquiring minds want to know...

I think UC has some of the best sammies in the city and will gladly pay the price for them. The Cuban is chock full of so much meat that I can only eat half of it in a sitting. Not to mention the Dogwood. Have you ever seen that thing? Their prices are not outrageous or crazy at all for what you get. Calavino is always accomodating (esp. with my picky ass!) and I bring my folks in from Dunwoody just to eat at UC.  <3

Seriously? You are harping on literally three words in what was otherwise a light hearted post? That was not meant as a slight towards you or your business. Your sandwiches cost more and we get why they cost more. No need to get up in arms about an off hand remark. If you would prefer, I can change it to you are not paying Highland Bakery Prices (which are about the same as yours) and still tell people it is a $4 sandwich and to calm the cuss down.

Yep.
