Slush Organic Market
« on: April 05, 2009, 02:28 pm »
On Friday at a little after 5 I decided to make a cream of Asparagus soup as part of dinner . . . . then realized I  had no cream.  Sigh.  I'm thinking "God, I really don't want to drive to either Kroger or to YDFM in Friday evening traffic . . . WAIT A MINUTE!!  Slush has it's little market!!"

I cruised down to our lovely little hamlet of EAV and checked out the Slush Market.

Yay me!  It was full of everything I could need, and soon enough produce will be on the way!

I'm so very, very pleased!   :)%

You get heavy cream or half & half? If half & half - how much was it?

They didn't have heavy cream so I got half & half.

How much?  Hang on . . .. *walking to kitchen, opening fridge . . . *

Organic Valley half & half -- $2.79 a pint.

Note that I would not do all of my shopping there because some things were pricier than normal (smaller shop . . . to be expected) but I was so happy to have this available as an alternative to driving out in Friday traffic.

How much would it be at Kroger, do you think?

thanks for the reminder -- it's so easy to forget that it's there...and after spending 20 min getting back from ERD yesterday (doh! on taking moreland), the price may well be right for small things!

Let's say it's a dollar more.

For 1 dollar I purchased a half hour or more of time, a pleasant walk  to the Village, a nice chat with a neighbors on the way, no car emissions in the air and some money for a local business.  I'm pleased!

$2.79 a pint?!?! Wow. That's why I want a non-hippie market. Offer me $2.79 a quart for what I would pay $1.79 for at Kroger and you would get me up there if I was really just after half & half. Short of that, I'll just think about what else I need at Kroger and run over there.

That's why I couldn't shop there all the time, but for things in a pinch I was very happy to have it there.  You know when you dread something so much it makes you itch?  That was me going to Kroger at 5 on Friday.  Normally I plan ahead, but we were planning on being at the cabin this weekend so I didn't hit YDFM last week.  I'm going to save the pint and bronze it in honor of how happy it made me not to have to go to Kroger.   :)

I had the same experience a couple of weeks ago when I was making buffalo shrimp tacos at home and I wanted some ranch dressing - but I went to the Slush Market at 6:30 and they were already closed - 30 minutes before their posted closing time.  >:O

Hippes use ranch dressing? That seems so un-hippielike.

Ya bitch if there are no businesses in the village and you bitch when they are!  I'm likely to do kroger to save a buck, but I am really interested in the sandwiches at Slush.  Anybody had them?  Any kind of menu on line?

Having the market in the village is great for what Go Sox needed and yes paying a little more for convenience is well worth it. I think Go Sox stated some very healthy alternatives to driving to kroger in Friday traffic as well.

I express an opinion when I have one. Always have - always will.

I agree completely. And I'm willing to pay a little more for the convenience. But when you're talking about only carrying organic stuff (which is more expensive to begin with) and then pricing in the convenience factor of the small local store - you're putting a double hurdle up for your customers.

Many a time I went to the Best Buy store and bought half & half in a pinch. And it was more expensive than Kroger. You offer me a reasonably-marked-up normal product and I'm there. But if they want to be a market that caters just to hippies and people desperate enough to pay really high prices for hippie stuff because they don't want to go to Kroger, that's their choice.

I get what you are pointing out and I think that's part of the reason for selling the things that they sell. They want to be different and sell the organic things that you can't get at any local store other than trekking to the big grocery store or farmers market. I don't think they want to be categorized with the "regular" stores and that's okay, I really hope people will support them and that they will make it.
