College Football Open Thread 2012
« on: February 01, 2012, 10:09 am »
Yes, it's that day - turning the clock to 2012 with National Signing Day.

A late switch (back) for LSU is QB Jeremy Liggins, who I've dubbed Big Lig - 6'3", 283 pounds "dual-threat" (triple if you count the ability to fall forward in a pile and gain six yards) guy from Mississippi who was the state's player of the year twice, etc. etc. So apparently not just a big fatty.

Anyway, it's a pretty intriguing "change of pace" concept to bring this giant. He never put up huge numbers either running or passing, so I think he'll end up always being a role player. But interesting.

But welcome, 2012 college football season!

Definitely some upside there. Will need to refine his throw, drop a few (dozen) lbs., and stop stuttering at the line on scripted runs, but could be the next big thing (ba dump ching!).

Looks like Clemson missed out on a 4-star linebacker because nobody showed him the Chick-fil-A on campus. I mean, Toomer's Corner is fine and all, but looks like there's a CFA right in the shadow of Jordan-Hare. Score one for the Aubies.

Always a fun day. At some point close to 11 am yesterday I had 9 tabs open in Chrome. We lost a QB (Trent Thompson from McEachern High in Powder Springs) who as recently as last Friday had said he was solidly committed to GSU because "thats where God wants me to be". Apparently God called him back this weekend and told him to go to Tennessee Tech. LOL.

Best recruit name that will cause overblown expectations? Gunner Kiel, QB, Notre Dame...poor kid

Yeah, I am interested in seeing how he does. He just "feels" like one of those guys whose hype is bigger than his performance will be.

The best reason to allow football players to practice all year is to keep them out of trouble in the spring semester.

Rumors are that it was related to a theft within the team.  This coming on the heels of a class with only one DB, and after two just transferred out.  Georgia's secondary depth just got awfully thin.

Urban in the Big 10 should be an interesting show.

I'm not sure even Urban Meyer can make the Big 10 interesting.

This is hilarious. So they have gentleman's agreement to not try and take a kid who has committed to another league school. I say league school because I doubt Michigan shows that courtesy to a MAC school. LOL.

This just shows that the Midwest is the inverse of the South. The Great Lakes is about the NFL and then college. People are not pining for Spring Practice like we are here. Friday Night Lights is a southern phenomena. Winning at college football is not as important as it is down here...except at Ohio State. Wisconsin is the #2 football team in its state after the Packers. Illinois is #3 after the Bears and ND.  The only school in the Midwest expecting a National Title every year is Ohio State and the proof is ...they hired Urban

(Psst! I think ND is in IN. Point taken, though.)

Chicago however is in Illinois and has the largest concentration of Catholics of any city in a America; so much so that there are separate high school leagues for public and Catholic schools. So yeah, Notre Dame is the the most popular college team in Chicago by far and more than half the state lives in Chicago.

I think watching how the other coaches deal with him will be a hoot! Wait till he starts running up the score on these guys! Think they are crying now, just wait.
