2010 wasn't a whole lot of anything either. Was Sean Witherspoon even in the game? I don't recall hearing his name once. Hawley and Franks....not much production there. Overall the defense sucks.
I was screaming "timeout" at the end of the 2nd quarter, the whole time they allowed almost a minute to run off the clock.Troy Aikman was saying it too..."why are they not calling timeout?" Because we have a very ineffective offensive coaching staff. Doubt Mularkey will get an offer as head coach after that game. Who else wants a 4th and inches QB sneak with your best running back on the bench, and you need a field goal with one of the most solid kickers....who never got in the game.
Just in case anyone hasn't figured it out....1st and ten, it's Turner up the missle. Any down and short-Turner up the middle. 4th and short-QB sneak. Never once this year have the Falcons varied from this formula.
Don't re-sign Turner, unload Dropsie White for even a 3rd round pick. Peria Jerry...bust, unload. Chris Owens has shown some spark the last half of the season, so a possible "give him one more try".
With no picks in the 1st and 4th rounds, we only get a pick starting around 50-something. Trading White would possibly get us up into the mid 2nd round, I would hope. Roddy's to busy with his constantly expanding family, and the regular court appearances regarding them. Trade him to the Rams for a 2nd or 3rd round pick (he's not worth a 1st round).
Start looking to smaller schools for the next Wes Welker. Not signing Turner will free up cap money. Look for a receiver with the abbility to catch a pass close to him....forget "explosive"....the Falcons need to get the 7-12 yard passes down first. Throwing 35-50 yards at a time is great but most games are won on moving the chains, eating the clock and catching balls that are thrown to you.
Get a new OC. That should be happeneing right now-firing Mike Mularkey, and really they could let VanGorder go as well. a pahrase you never hear in a Falcons game..."VanGorder is dialing up the blitz", or the "Falcons use a lot of exotic blitz packages". Those terms are for teams like the Patriots, Texans, Packers and Saints. Even the Giants use more blitzes...because our secondary is so weak, we have to play zone all game. The Falcons looked like they are still using the playbook from the Jerry Glanville era. Four and five WR sets are the norm now...we send out Julio, Dropsie, the aging "future hall of famer" Tony Gonzalez, and then wonder why the receivers are all double covered. we can't use 2 TE sets because the blocking is so bad. And apparently Mularkey just hates screen passes....you know those short little throws to the back or TE, after allowing the defense to get inside the line? The ones the Saints use to Sproles against us that get 12-20 yards at a time?
I forget which player it was, but he called the Falcons "one of the most predictable teams in NFL history". And it showed yesterday....
And speaking of blowing coverage-goodbye Dunta Robinson. This guy missed his assignments so much, he accounts for pretty much half the Giants score. Teams now throw at him all day, knowing he can't adjust fast enough, and he's not smart enough to read the routes. Waste of money.
Rebuild the offensive line. Get a line that can hold more than 3 seconds. Then, if Ryan can't get the ball to anyone, maybe it's time to look at getting a new QB. I like Ryan, but his career has really taken a downturn since the playoff/Packer loss last year. Once he gets behind, he gets panicky in the pocket. Sadly, Tim Tebow was more poised in the pocket, even when it was collapsing yesterday, than Ryan did.
All in all....Falcons need a major overhaul. Less flashy commercials with Sam Jackson ("what do falcons do? Falcons F#$k up!") and concentrate on getting a team that has the will to win, the heart and drive to be winners.
