At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single
minute discussing my status.
They have far more important matters to address. I
want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

Because they were going to fire me and I am trying to save my already ruined legacy.

Exactly.

"Hey, I'm leaving ... not really a shock since I'm 145 years old and am just a figurehead anyway ... but let's just stop talking about all this penis and anus stuff, mkay?"

Not much redeeming about how anybody at Penn State is handling this.

Joe Paterno officially not going to be pretending to coach Penn State any longer after this season.

Quote
Paterno full statement: STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Nov. 9, 2011 -- I am absolutely devastated by
the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families,
and I pray for their comfort and relief.

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in
mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have
been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of
this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single
minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I
want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.
This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit
of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the
season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my
life doing everything I can to help this University.

IT'S NOT THE UNIVERSITY THAT NEEDS- OR NEEDED- YOUR HELP, YOU OBLIVIOUS, ROTTEN OLD FUCK.

And things only get more interesting.  For instance:

No one can find the DA who declined to prosecute Sandusky the first time;

I mean literally.  They can't f*cking find him.  And:

The title of Sandusky's autobiography?  You have got to be kidding me.

Lulz:

If you're not aware, "Coach McQueary" = guy who as a graduate assistant walked in on Paterno's longtime defensive coordinator (emeritus) having anal sex with a 10 year old boy in the Penn State football showers, who told Paterno and who is among everybody at Penn State who never did anything more about it.

Timeline of events. They deserve to lose their entire football program, their jobs, livelihoods, everything. For some reason, this is even more despicable to me than the catholic church scandal -- all for a football program? Humanity disappoints me yet again.

It's unfathomable to me that so many people witnessed and heard about and closed a blind eye! I expect this of the Catholic church since we've been hearing about the cover-ups for so many years... this is a whole new low...

Looks like the whole state let it go on for all this time. Seems to me the University President is more to blame than JoePa. Don't get me wrong, JoePa should have done more, but the Pres knew about all the incidents and the police force as well. Fail on all fronts.

Good job by Rick Reilly of humanizing the victims of sexual abuse and making sure people remember this isn't about Joe Paterno, but about the victims.

http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/7208581/rick-reilly-penn-state-scandal

However, in saying it's not about Paterno but about the victims, he reminds us that in this case, it really was about Joe Paterno and everybody who could have and should have been advocates for the victims rather than co-conspirators in everything a victim suffers through.
