Alternatives to Comcast
« on: January 19, 2012, 10:10 am »
Sorry if this has been asked before: but for those who don't have Comcast, what do you use? (We are not able to get U-verse yet). We are thinking Direct TV, but what are the best options for internet?

Thanks.

We have DSL without a phone line from AT&T.  It costs a few bucks above their standard DSL prices, but better that than a land line we wouldn't use.

Bandwidth hasn't really been a problem for us, but we don't do a whole lot of data uploading, and download speed was good enough for streaming Netflix videos.  That said, I don't think we have the base package, either.

Sad fact is, there really aren't that many options.  DSL above 1.5 mbps d/l is not possible in many areas (my house, for instance).  U-Verse is STILL not available in many areas (my house, for instance).  CLEAR (which is what we have) is decent, but not 100% consistent and does not serve all the areas around here.  Friday and Saturday there is almost always a noticeable drop in speeds.  I swore off Comcast.

I'm amazed that U-Verse hasn't expanded more around here. You'd think once they decide a given area is a good market for them they'd make sure they cover it. Wait, it's AT&T - you totally wouldn't think that.

We remain "happy" with U-Verse Internet and TV. There are some annoying bugs that come up like some devices losing Internet connectivity on occasion (solved with a reboot/reconnect command on the router) and from time to time the non-DVR receiver loses its connection to the DVR which wipes out the list of recorded shows and you have to wait a few minutes for that list to re-populate before you can watch anything.

We had a major freakout on the TV side a couple of weeks ago (the first time we were pretty much shut out from using the TV service), but it was solved by rebooting the router and the TV boxes.

Our tenants had CLEAR for a while and it stunk. Forget streaming from HULU or anything of that nature.

I'm still sour on Comcast but I'm less sour after they cut my bill in half when I threatened to leave.  I like their new iPad and iPhone app for Xfinity also.

Still no UVerse on Braeburn and Direct/Dish couldn't get a signal in our back yard, and I didn't want a dish visible from the street.

I just have zero expectations for Comcast customer service.  I'm resigned to keep them for a while.

Is there a point to you responding?  My post clearly stated results may vary by location.

Of course there was. You stated you had Clear, it worked for you (and as you've repeated) that you knew it varied by location. My pointing out that it didn't work on the less classy end of Flat Shoals was entirely relevant.

Now, when you came back in and reiterated that it worked fine for you, I wasn't really sure why you did that.
At first, it seemed kinda douchey, but since you spent so much time arguing with Cappy about not being a douche, I assumed you were just being this guy:
 :p<

to which  "yay you!" seemed like an appropriate  :p< response.

If I was wrong and you were just being a douche, then no, there wasn't a point to any of it and you may carry on.

That is our plan A, but since stuff like that never seems to happen to me, we are thinking of a plan B.

If faced with a choice between the life of my firstborn and giving Comcast another dollar, I'd need some serious time to think about...

My initial response to you was about the "forget streaming", as though this OP could write it off completely.  I countered you...and then you came back with your flippant "yay for you" comment.  I'm sure you're totally NOT a douchebag.  Neither is anyone on the Buzz.  I have my moments, though.
