Definitely don't freak out yet...

I just repaired an iPhone that had been washed in a commercial washing machine for 45 minutes on high heat and detergent! New battery, new screen and back (they shattered), and they were back on their way and very happy. (Video of phone being washed is currently in editing for my "commercial")

I have the same laptop you have, I would almost guarantee your hard drive is fine. It's possible the logic board is fried but oddly enough electronics can get wet and survive without issue.

Give the computer a day or two to dry out as suggested. Rice is helpful but putting a 15in macbook in rice is a little harder than a phone and it gets into every port in your computer.

If your company has another macbook of similar design/age you can easily swap the drives and you will be as you were before.

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me hope that maybe this little guy will survive. I have it sitting on a table still drying out right now, might try turning it on tomorrow and hoping for the best. I wondered about the rice as well and did worry about it getting all up in my computer. It is sitting with some rice in the bag, but not a ton. I am hoping I luck out and little MacBook survives and I give it a big hug and promise never to let it get near water again.

Please make it little guy, your mommy loves you!

We're with you

If $40 won't break your bank, I would take it to a pro before you turn it on so that they can diagnose. If there's still life in it, but also water, turning it on could cause a short and leave no hope.

This is very true. I fear that in my initial panicked state when it first happened and I tried to turn it on that I might have killed it. I keep trying to remind myself that, as Nate said, electronics can and have survived worse and that all will be fine. Little MacBook and I might be making a trip to Decatur tomorrow or Thursday.

I swear my cat, who has NEVER been a snuggly cat EVER, senses that he is very close to getting the boot. For the past two nights he has been curling up in bed right next to me, like he is trying to prove that he does indeed love me and is very sorry for what he has done. Of course, all of his effort was rendered null when he jumped up on my nightstand (that the computer is nowhere near fyi) and tried to knock over my (sealed) water bottle. I swear that cat is out to get me.

So, it has been drying out since Monday morning. Do you think it will be safe to try to turn it on today, or should I give it one more day?

God I miss that fucking computer so much.

Honestly, I would take a tiny screwdriver and open the bottom. Check to see if you see any water. I did a toilet water submerged phone last night. Definitely had some water left in it after almost a week (2 days on rice). The battery needed to be replaced and the screen was damaged, other than that it was good to go.

Do you know how much water was actually spilled?

Is your cat thirsty?
Yes, I agree, with that I knew someone close that smoked and went to chewing tobacca. Used a spit can which was yuck, and then the door of his car.~Denise

I wanna say maybe about half a glass to a quarter of a glass a little bigger than a pint glass...but I doubt the glass was even full when it was knocked over. I will be dismantling the bottom today and checking on the battery.

Nope, he gets plenty of water. I am pretty vigilant about keeping the water bowl full for both of them. He just likes to knock things over that are on my nightstand and counter tops because he likes to be an ass. I think it's because he is deaf and does not know how to communicate that he is bored and/or hungry. The fucker eats a lot and if he had his way he would have unlimited access to food and would be even fatter than he is now.

This is a terrible trait of deaf cats, we have discussed this I think about DK doing the knock shit over thing, especially water glasses. She loves water... Start the shower and she is in there. Wash dishes, when they are done she is in the sink. In the past few months she has done it less, but she definitely still loves to push the waterbowl and splash it, knock pint glasses around, etc.

I would imagine that your laptop should be free of moisture at this point.

Yeah, step one should have been to open it up and stick it in front of a fan for a few days. No powering up until you're sure it's dried out.
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity but they've always worked for me.

Why do I feel I have failed on so many fronts with drying this thing out? Sigh, I am gonna give it another day...

I am sad to report that little MacBook did not survive the Big Pippin Spill of 2012. It appears that either the logic board, battery, or both are dead. IT is gonna deal with it now, but at least the hard drive appears to have survived.

Sigh, I call uncle.
