WTF happened to my Sprint signal?
« on: December 19, 2011, 05:11 pm »
**I realize EAV folks probably are working off a different tower from me...so this may only apply to those of us in the vicinity of the southern parts of western East Atlanta / eastern Ormewood Park.

In the last several months we've noticed a significant decline in our Sprint signal, but in the last couple of weeks it's been so bad that we can't hold a conversation without the Airave femtocell device.  Problem is, the Airave doesn't play well with my wife's phone, causing echoing and audio delays which make a phone call pretty much impossible.  Has anyone noticed a problem with their Sprint signal recently?  A call to Sprint didn't get me anywhere...they said there were no issues with the towers in the area.  I really hate to switch to a different carrier, but we may have to if this isn't resolved - Verizon and AT&T are just way too freaking expensive - but we depend on our cell phones since we dumped our AT&T land line.

Maybe it's me and the other iPhone users now on Sprint? I've gone from "hey, pretty swell coverage!" over at the Ormewood School when I first got on Sprint to whatever the little 'o' indicator in place of 3G means most of the time. I might have seen a little bit of a degrading signal in EAV, but it's definitely most seriously screwed up in Ormewood Park. Once you get over to Boulevard it seems to have no problems.

Well I'm about three blocks from the Ormewood School, so you may be experiencing my problem.  I think we are served from the tower down by Ghetto Kroger/Family Dollar.  I know that's where we get our Clear 4G service from.

The SPRINT service got so bad for me that I cancelled my service last Friday. I was also pissed at the SPRINT personnel @ Edgewood that treated me like dogshit! When I called  SPRINT to complain, they did not seem to give a flying rat's ass! I hope they fully understand the meaning of ICE COLD DAY IN HELL!

I've been quite happy with my Verizon switch. I was done with AT&T and the word on the street was that Sprint was gonna buckle under the weight.
Next time you drink a homebrew, thank Jimmy Carter, who on October 14, 1978 signed H.R.1337 legalizing homebrewing in the United States.

Hmmm . . . I just went from T-Mobile to Sprint -- so far, so good.  Have had a signal everywhere except insides ERD Lowe's; fine at the house (near the Cap'n).

I'd say I've been happy, but not "quite happy" with the Sprint switch. I think you're probably right about Sprint having some trouble with iPhones coming aboard, but to this point I've been able to use Sprint in places and situations (like football games) where AT&T would have laughed at me. All things being equal, however, I think Verizon is emerging as the best provider of iPhone service.

At this point, though, I just could not justify the extra $50 or $60 a month for the same service.  Actually - not really the same - but for all intents and purposes the same since I usually do not hit what Verizon would cap my usage at.  My wife took her phone in to Sprint and was told it actually is a problem on her device that is not playing well with the Airave.   She's getting a replacement and, come January 1st, will be upgrading to an iPhone...so hopefully this problem will fade.

I know come next summer Sprint is switching their 4G service to LTE, so I'm hoping that means the Atlanta towers will all be upgraded since we were among their first 4G markets.

The scoop on Sprint:

http://newsroom.sprint.com/press_kits.cfm?presskit_id=19

I would agree my Sprint service has degraded slightly, and this likely is due to increased load from certain iPhone users.

Sprint apparently is rolling out the LTE full scale and will taper off WiMax after that, at which time it will be interesting to see what promotions they have to upgrade devices to LTE since they will be selling Wimax devices through 2012.
You realize everyone thinks you are a total sci fi geek, right?

I've noticed better-than-December Sprint 3G connectivity in Ormewood Park this week.

I've noticed better-than-December Sprint 3G connectivity in Ormewood Park this week.

Maybe it's because of the call I made.  Tech support said "lower than normal rating on that tower...I'll send you over to escalation".  Escalation said "the rating on that tower is acceptable".  I said "is no signal at all in a 3 to 4 block radius acceptable? I don't give a flying f**k what your computer says.  Send someone out here to see for themselves how my signal at home went from 4 or 5 bars down to 1 or even zero and half my calls get dropped.  Oh, and by the way, your Airave device sucks balls."

I haven't really noticed an improvement, though...so don't thank me yet.

I was just about to come in here to say that I'd made a point to cruise by Ormewood School twice this week, once while making a call, and am still receiving a full compliment of service bars.
