Madison Theatre

The place would be awesome if it weren't vacant. I went inside one day when they (the owner and construction guys) were working on it. This place is like an old style theatre with dignitary seats right above the stage. The stage is rather large. It's about the size of variety playhouse, but it doesn't have the lobby area, which might help benefit the place actually. You could have a bar right in there (imagine a small Tabernacle). It would be a rather large, yet intimate space. This is what the neighborhood needs, especially if we want to draw some nationally renowned music acts into the neighborhood. Any idea of any progress as far as renting this place out? It is rather hopeful that I saw the owner working on it afterall...

WTF?! No one can respond...bummer. I'll take my message to the streets where it counts.

OK ... so taken to the streets.

No attempt to be heavy-handed or whatnot with locking this post down before ... we have an understanding. Just that we were talking Madison elsewhere, so trying to channel the conversation.

But, it's absolutely right that "They should open _____ in the EAV" doesn't apply to anything as well as it does the Madison. So talk here, talk there, but Madison should come back.

Well put. See, bar talk can be productive :)

Did you know that years ago, that they used to use the stage for performing music? And, it was a theater that had the continued picture shows. Kids would go every Saturday to see them.

Apparently, because Abe's removed the original storefronts and replaced them with what appear to be recycled racquetball entrances, there's no chance to get historical designation for the Madison Theater. My understanding is that it would have to be restored to its' original condition for that to happen.

And I sorta wonder if Abe didn't know that when he made the change.

Just surfing the web and came across this old ad for the original 1964 theatrical release of "A Hard Day's Night" starring  the Beatles, which shows it opened at, among other locations, The Madison Theater at 496 Flat Shoals Avenue...   Not sure where else to put it, so I just threw it in this old Madison Theater thread.  Anyway, enjoy...

If I won the lottery I would hire somebody with experience to turn the Madison into a community theater/movie house. It breaks my heart to see it sit there and rot.

That's hugely downplaying the coolness of this.

Played at the Madison and the Starlight. And I count 11 drive-in theaters in Atlanta on that list.

Don't forget what an astounding thing Hard Day's Night was. This sort of a view into a band exploding that big and that fast - unheard of. I can just see the teens of East Atlanta pouring out of the Madison somehow changed forever ...

Come to think of it ... isn't this about the time East Atlanta began its slow decline?

It would make a great French restaurant with live shows (think Moulin Rouge).

That would be cool. Might even be profitable. Mine definitely wouldn't.

Indian food, with big Bollywood-style shows on the stage.

OR... Make the local meetings more interesting:  Serve food while Ed delivers his monthly NPU soliloquy upon the stage.

That is so cool.

I think the blogger who posted it was a projectionist at the movie theater I worked at in high school.   *** Blast from the past.
