Pierogi Restaurant
« on: April 06, 2011, 09:27 am »
What are your thoughts on a restaurant that serves Pierogi?  Is there even a place in Atlanta to get them?

also...if you can fill out a restaurant market survey I am doing for a group project for an MBA class I would appreciate it.  It'll take less than 5 minutes and is anonymous.

Heaping Bowl (formerly of EAV) is sorely missed by me.  I am not sure of the history of why that place didn't make it...was it a problem with the food or with the business side?

The Brick Store serves them, but not in what I would call the traditional style (fried in butter or deep fried).  Theirs have a garlic cream sauce and veggies. Still good though.

My uncle's church in PA used to make from scratch and sell them frozen as a fundraiser.    Eating them fried in butter with a lot of salt and pepper is one of my favorite childhood memories.

I loved HB too... back in 2004/2005 there was a change in management... as I recall the owners sold or gave the restaurant to a younger family member who ran it to the ground fairly quickly.  I miss it.

Both. The old owners sold to a youngish guy with little restaurant experience. There was a marked drop in service, food quality, the portion flexibility and sizes, the menu and the availability of specials. It was a pretty extreme drop as well.  As the quality dropped, the management tried to make up food costs by cutting corners and raising prices. They didn't last too long after that, from my recollection. We knew the old owner and the new, and while they were all very nice, the experience level, I believe, made a big difference.

God I used to love that place.

My favorite dish was the chicken and noodles....My mouth still waters thinking about  that comfort food from 10 years ago. I know I can make it at home(Duh!) but it just isn't the same.

I think Heaping Bowl was out of  business by 2002, maybe 2003. It has been a long while.....

We had pierogis last night at home.....Kroger sells them in the frozen food aisle and they're good! My wife's from Buffalo (and Polish) so we have them a lot and we found a great authentic Polish restaurant out on Buford Highway, past 285, that serves them, but it's a haul to get there. We went there with some friends from Mastodon and their wives and I think we scared the owners and staff.
I had never had them before the Heaping Bowl and they did serve a gigantic portion when they first opened. Was it when Todd got involved that HB started their decline, GS?

Nope. Closed in 2005.

i make some KICKIN pierogies ;)    they are a HUGE pain in the ass to make, but the payoff is SO good.  that reminds me...i have the very last of the batch in the freezer...just enough for lunch.  :D   |:)|

but for realz...i was actually thinking, PITA aside, I should make some this week.  perhaps i should take bids ;)

I make a mean golumpki (though the recipe comes from my mom's (German) side of the family instead of my father's Polish side, and was always called Pigs in a Blanket).
