Bali?
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:30 am »
My husband and I will be traveling around Asia for a month in April and are ending in Bali. We've pretty much figured out our other lodgings (except Rangoon, but we're hoping to hear back from a friend with relatives there), except for Bali. There are tons of resorts, but we're not really resort types. A villa on or near the beach with a pool, or a hut on the beach would be ideal for us. Anyone been, and what are your experiences?  North or south island?  Mountains, rice paddies or beach?  Thoughts?

I thought this said "Bail?" and I was really wondering what Go Sox had gotten into.

I spent a week there this spring with a bunch of friends. We rented a villa (http://www.anyarestate.com/bali-villa/villa_anyar.php) near Seminyak that had its own chef and cleaning staff and pool, for super cheap. The guys biked to the beach one day, but it wasn't really close by. About 20 minutes away. One day we hired a driver to Ubud, in the mountains, of "Eat Pray Love" fame. It's got a lot more touristy stuff, more spas, and was a lot more picturesque than the flatlands.

I also spent a day or so at this hotel http://www.satriyacottages.com/ in Kuta, which was highly touristy and populated almost entirely by 1. people aggressively selling things and 2. drunk Australians. Not that there's anything wrong with either group.

Katherine, that looks awesome!  We were really looking for a 1 bedroom villa (it's just two of us), but there are many more 2 bedrooms available and they're so slightly more expensive and have such better amenities, that we may just go with it.  After three weeks of very cheap living, a luxury splurge would kind of be the shit.  The location is also perfect. Hmmmmmmmm.

My husband warned me about certain areas being full of drunk Australians!  Heh!  Funny you said that!  We can visit those places at night and then run back to our villa!

The Anyar Estate has a few one- and two-bedroom villas as well, all with private pools. You can arrange the services however you'd like. The people there -- all over Bali, really -- were very friendly and helpful. It's a great island. I just didn't like how long it took to get there. :)

The drunk Aussies aren't so bad. It's like being in L5P on any given Saturday night, but with boisterous ruggers instead of wan hipsters.

Getting there will be fine since we're starting in Tokyo and hopping downwards through Beijing, Bangkok, Rangoon, Singapore, Cambodia, Hanoi then Bali, so no flight is particularly long, and there are a bunch of boat and train trips stuck througout to various spots within. The bitch will be getting back to Atlanta from Komodo Island to Bali, to Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo then Atlanta all in one day.  But who gives a shit. I'll sleep and read and drink wine and it will all have been worth it!

I'll take the boisterous riggers, thanks!   |@|

I think we found another place that's equally awesome but considerably smaller (and cheaper), but only a quarter mile or so away, Mango Tree Villas.  I'm torn between this two currently. I appreciate the recommendation!

Dengue Fever.  use bug spray religiously.  my old boss and everyone he travelled with got it when they went.
Yes, I agree, with that I knew someone close that smoked and went to chewing tobacca. Used a spit can which was yuck, and then the door of his car.~Denise
