Day to kill in Huntsville, AL
« on: November 27, 2011, 12:17 am »
I am in Huntsville for work, but my jobs are on the back side of the clock, so while I will likely be working till about 0300 tomorrow, I will not be working again until about 11PM, so I have all day to kill after I catch some sleep.  Any suggestions on things to do here?

The Space and Rocket Center, of course
Drive up Monte Sano to the state park, and check out the zen garden and the view of downtown
I'd suggest the botanical garden, but the weather doesn't look like it'll be good for it.
Downtown is small, but pretty cool. The historic depot and art museum are on Church street. Harrison Bros Hardware is on the south side of the courthouse.

If you have a chance, swing by Bandito Burrito on Governor's Drive. I ate there religiously for nearly 8 years.
If you like German food, Huntsville has some of the best you'll eat anywhere (thanks to von Braun and his buddies settling in half a decade ago) - Ol Heidelberg was the go-to when I lived there, but there are several other places.

We're here for good time, not for a long time. - Fawkes

2nd the coffee's rec on USSRC.  they have a new temporary exhibit dedicated to von braun that just opened a few weeks ago (the permanent exhibit is worth touring as well). they also have an imax theater and usually have a space related film in the line-up.

i would definitely visit heidelberg for dinner.  bandito would be a good lunch spot or you could go down the street and eat at a taco truck...only this one is made out of an old school bus. delicious food and cheap.  i actually prefer the food there over bandito.  http://blog.al.com/thebus/2010/04/huntsvilles_10_oddest_eateries.html

if the weather sucks and you just want to relax and catch a movie, head over to Bridge Street (outdoor mall located just outside the arsenal near research park) and hit up the Monaco.  probably the nicest movie theater I have ever been in.  the vip balcony area upstairs has large leather chairs with a bar and no one under 21 is allowed.  http://monacopicturesusa.com/

Great rec's guys.  Looks like my day will be to work on expenses, go to the Space Center, and then Gander Mountain for some clothes shopping, with a Buritto in there somewhere.  thanks!

Sooooooooooooo glad this thread wasn't about killing Bambi in Alabama
I don't have kids.  I've never figured out what they're for.
