December Long Weekend Getaway Recommendations?
« on: November 01, 2011, 05:00 pm »
A threesome of us (me, Kevin, my sister Mary) have a tradition of getting away near Christmas-time for three or four nights each year in Manhattan.  However, she's going to have a four-day conference in NYC in early December so we are thinking of breaking tradition and going somewhere else this year.

It must have an urban vibe...we like to eat, drink, people-watch, shop, and do silly touristy things on these trips, and take in a cultural amenity or two.  Chicago and DC are also out, because she's already traveling to both of those cities over the next month or so, too.

Since it's only three or four nights, we don't want to go more than one or at the most two time zones away.  Suggestions?  Asheville, Savannah and Charleston are already being kicked around between us.

New Orleans.

Yeah, no shit.

- eat,
- drink,
- people-watch,
- shop,
- do silly touristy things
- and take in a cultural amenity or two

Does any place say that more than New Orleans? Plus December is a great time to go there and there's hardly any other place that would be better to go in December.

New Orleans.

Oooh!  Good one!  That hadn't crossed my mind.  I think Kevin may never have been there too.  Miami had crossed my mind...thanks...keep 'em coming.

New Orleans or Savannah. Both are full of history, food, sexiness, sultriness, people watching, walking and fantastic places to stay!  Music and wonderful restaurants!  Two of my favorite cities!  I personally would pick New Orleans first if you've never been.  It's like a gorgeous (if a bit dirty) whore serving you amazing food and drinks in bed.  Wonderful city.

Small world.  I am also contemplating a long December weekend in Manhattan, Savannah, New Orleans, or South Beach.

Manhattan irises!  Nothing beats it in December.  Only reason we're not returning again for the umpteenth time is because my sister will have so recently been.  I love love love love Manhattan in December.  Well, any time for that matter, but December especially.

Chattanooga - An easy trip and a very manageable city.
Chicago - One of the coolest cities during the holidays.  I love the Christmas season there.
Greenville SC - Similar in scale to Chattanooga, the Downtown is a lot of fun.  Usually good shows at the Peace Center.  You might run out of things to do if you're there for more than three days, though, and it's a bit homogenous, so not the same quality of people-watching you'd get someplace else.

Of the ones you're kicking around, highly recommend Charleston.  Just a beautiful, beautiful city made even lovelier during Christmas.  I have a friend who does architectural tours there, and they're entertaining even for non-architecture geeks.  Also a very underrated city for foodies.

I love Manhattan as well, especially in the spring, but may want a warmer destination this year.  Charleston is now on the list as well.

Charleston is pretty nice in December.  Not really the tourist season so it's not so crowded but there is still lots of touristy stuff to do.  Great place for foodies, history buffs, shopping, architecture, parks, beaches (tho the water is a bit cold).  Lots of stuff to do and very little closes down for the winter, lots of green too and many gardens will still have things blooming in December.

New Orleans +10000
My mom and I decided to go over Thanksgiving.  Taking the train which is 12 hours each way but totally worth it versus driving unbelievably hungover on the way home.

New Orleans has received enthusiastic thumbs-up from both K and M, so that's where we'll go!
