Nashville (Again)
« on: December 31, 2011, 11:02 am »
Again because I did look at past Nashville travel related threads and have already picked a few things out of them (really wish I could go to that flea market!), but I thought I'd start a current one for my trip specifically.

I'll be there for about a week, during the week, next month.  My itinerary is pretty full, looking for things to do evenings after 7:00 and for one day when I'll be finished with my business at 10:00 am.  I'm considering checking out the print shop that Meltco mentioned in another thread, and I'll probably stop into Third Man Records to see if they happen to be releasing a manufactured obscurity that day.

My destination is smack in the middle of downtown, and I probably won't venture too far from there.  Looking for hip neighborhoods, tourist attractions, or even cool people to hang out with . . .

The heart of Nashville is stuffed full of "hip" neighborhoods; amazingly I keep learning about more. I think a Yelp or something would be invaluable in finding out what cool eating / drinking places have popped up and where they are. Last month I was taken to Edgehill, which is built around some old factory (they have a commercial area where one building is the old factory, one is a new building made to look old) and this place called Bella Napoli. That was pretty great - small little real Italian pizza place; the kind where they tell you to fuck off if you ask for pepperoni. And in the old factory space.

Along with Hatch Show Print, I'd highly recommend stopping in at Gruhn Guitars downtown. You might not be able to ask to see that $225,000 mandolin now, but you can gawk at and potentially touch some pretty interesting instruments. Tell them you're in the market for a 1960 Les Paul and see what they show you (click Price twice to sort that page right for this bit).

Mafioso's pizza, 12 South Taproom (sort of like a less Earl-y Earl, food is good), any of the Pucketts for good basic food (and meat) outstanding icecreams: http://www.jenisicecreams.com/, check to see if the taco wagon behind Savant Vintage Couture on 12th South is open (owner of Savant makes tacos!)
Records: Great Escape (has been very very good to us!!)
Nice stuff store to look around at: Pre-Post Modern: 2110 8th Avenue South (you may find presents for your Twit there).
Unfortunately our boss Nashville pals look to be coming here while you are going there, which sucks because you have very similar tastes in music!! The Martian Denny Orchestra just played, but if you see them listed, go see 'em! They play quirky early 60's instrumentals and you would really like them. Everyone in the band has been in a super cool band (or has a record label that puts out those bands) from about 1963-now.

Have a great time!

The Parthenon is a decent tourist attraction to check out.
Not exactly sure when you will be there but if you've never been to The Ryman it might be worthwhile to see who is there. The Grand Old Opry is doing some nights there in January
The Belcourt is their kind of Plaza/Tara equivalent, check their calender and see if anything is playing you might enjoy. Also serves booze which makes any movie experience better.

I saw that Kenny Rogers would be playing with a symphony orchestra while I'm there.  I think I'll pass on that.

Kevy, I think you and I will be there the same weekend. I'm going for the Predators game (since we no longer have a hockey team of our own, alas) on the 21st. So I'm keeping an eye on this thread, especially attractions that don't involve music.  :)

Very much NOT kidding.  I may bust out 'Lady' at karaoke night, but sitting by myself with a bunch of $100 dollar seat old fogies watching a classical arrangement of 'The Gambler' surely ain't my thing!.  That one's not at Opreyland either, turns out.

Kevy, I think you and I will be there the same weekend.

I'm still undecided if I'll be there for the weekend actually.  I'm going to be in town for an insurance adjuster's convention, so I'll be pretty worn out from that.  This is me:

If you call an event designed to train the most efficient methods and standards to help people in need get their lives back in order, for people willing to spend extended periods of time away from their homes and families scummy, I guess.

I've been to enough conventions to know a "Conference Man" when I see one... you, Kevy, don't fit into that stereotype at all, but you will know one when you see one!

I've been to several of these.  You're required to attend a yearly orientation for each carrier just to have the ability to work for them should the opportunity arise.  The number one topic for all of them?  High standards of customer service.  Number two?  Best practices for fulfilling the aleatory (to the customers benefit) contract that that customer signed.
