Wedding Venue?
« on: August 30, 2011, 02:13 pm »
The GF and I just got engaged and now the pressure to plan a wedding is full on! Anybody have some advice on cool, cheap locations around Atlanta or even outside of it in the much greater Atlanta area? I would love some place like Serenbe (http://serenbe.com/, http://simplybloomphotography.com/blog/?p=7391) just without the uppity prices. Even as far as Blue Ridge or the South Carolina coast would be cool. Any ideas?

In April I got married at Wolf Mountain Winery in Dahlonega.  I'd recommend it.

We did ours at the Trolley Barn in Inman Park. It was awesome.
Next time you drink a homebrew, thank Jimmy Carter, who on October 14, 1978 signed H.R.1337 legalizing homebrewing in the United States.

Woooooo!  Congrats!!  Frog's Leap is another Dalonhega winery that does weddings.  A former co-worker of mine, Craig Kritzer, owns it.  The Botanical Gardens are lovely. Piedmont Park is lovely as well (except they've screwed a few people over recently) as is Park Tavern.  What time of year are you doing it?

We got married in Tybee Island on the beach, then the reception was at the guard house, with about 50 people.  We had BBQ catered (Sticky Fingers in Savannah).  The whole thing, with week long honeymoon ran us about $5k.

The guard house is awesome because they let you BYOBs, which kept the price down, and you rent the thing for $600.

This is the Guard house:

It's basically 2 rooms, one for dancing (wood floor) and one for eating (tiled), small kitchen, large wrap around porch (where we held our cocktail hour)

I can't recommend Sticky Fingers enough, either!  Awesome food and Kym (catering manager) is AWESOME!  We paid $8 pp which was pulled pork, 2 sides, and tea, lemonade and water.
Savannah, GA - (912) 629-6299
7921 Abercorn Street, Savannah

A good site for nice, fake, flowers is afloral.com

If you're at all interested in doing it in Tybee, LMK, and I can basically walk you through it.

The only thing I probably wouldn't recommend is doing it ON the beach, unless you do it at night--lots of fat dudes in speedos LOL.  But maybe you could do it at the lighthouse instead:

It's about a 4 hr drive from Atlanta, btw.

EDIT--Just wanted to add that everyone who came from EAV was like "This is like EAV on the beach."  And everyone LOVED the location (even uppity in laws, lol).  I can't tell you how much we love Tybee.

Yeah, we looked at that. It might be a bit steeper than I'm happy with but not as bad as most of the places in town.

We looked at Park Tavern and it's really steep too. We're talking about July or August of next year. I'll have to look up the two Dalonhega locations. We are still trying to contemplate somewhere in the US Virgin Islands since I would love a beach option and be able to go diving during the day and it wouldn't force a bunch of people to get passports but that would be really, really steep when it comes to forcing everyone to travel and spend money on plane tickets. Sigh, that one might end up being out of the question.

Tybee might really be an option! I know we discussed Jekyll in passing but nothing specific and I kind of do like the GA coast! Thanks for the details? Is the lighthouse really an option for a wedding reception? That would be kind of cool.

YEP!

But, I would highly recommend having an indoor place like the guard house set up in case of bad weather.

The new chapel at Agnes Scott is beautiful.  We thought about it but the whole rental detail stuff had not been worked out yet since it was fairly new at the time.  They now have all of that stuff sorted out.

If you have someone in your family with a Decatur residance, the Solarium is free to Decaturites, I'm told:  http://www.thesolarium.com/utilize.html

The previously mentioned Atl. Botanical Gardens, Trolley Barn and The Solarium are the first things to come to mind in Atlanta.

Moving out of the city, the following come to mind...all have beautiful settings but the cost may be more than what you have in mind:
Chateau Elan Winery
Vines Botanical Gardens in Loganville
Barnsley Gardens in Adairsville....I've always thought the mansion ruins would be the perfect place for a wedding.
Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain...there are several spots throughout the gardens that would be perfect for a wedding, including a beautiful seclude chapel overlooking a lake.

I had a friend get married around the ruins at Barnsley Gardens and their reception was in the ruins.  It was a late afternoon/evening wedding and they put candles in all kinds of nooks and crannies in the ruins.  It was beautiful!  Plus their families really enjoyed renting out the cabins there.

A friend of a friend recently married at one of the antebellum sites in my hometown, Madison, Georgia.  Azaleas and dogwoods are in bloom in the spring and make a lovely background.
